Cass County CLOSE-UPS

Name: Darcy Humphrey

Location: Hughes Springs

Among the sea of hard-working young people at the Expo Building last Tuesday, a blazing orange ponytail stands out. With a look of confidence on her face, the girl handles her show goat with an experienced hand as the judge orders them to parade in a circle.

At the age of 14, Darcy Humphrey of Hughes Springs is already the owner of 24 Champion Belt Buckles. Two of those awards were earned last week at the Cass County Livestock Show in Atlanta.

She and her goat, Chester, won the Reserve Champion Goat award and Darcy was given the coveted Junior Showmanship Award.

Cheering her on are her parents, Jimmy and Darla Humphrey, her grandparents, and older brother, Danny – who won his share of FFA awards before graduating high school. They set up a canopy in the Expo parking lot and had a picnic to celebrate her wins – something they do quite often.

According to her dad, Darcy is a self-motivated go-getter. “She does all the work herself,” he remarked. “She’s got shows lined up for every weekend.”

Darcy, a freshman, is the Chaplain of the Hughes Springs High School Chapter of the Future Farmers of America (FFA). And just as she has her busy weekends lined out, she also has her future planned.

It should come as no surprise that Darcy wants to be a high school Ag teacher when she finishes high school. No doubt she will be passing on her winning showmanship to her future students.
