Bulldogs top Ore City, 38-3, in district play
Queen City hosted the Ore City Rebels last Friday night at Smith-Wall Stadium.
The Bulldogs played near-flawless football in the first half as they rolled to a 24-0 lead at halftime.
In the second half #thecITy put up a couple of scores to finish off the “other” city by a final score of 38-3.
By all accounts the score could have been worse, but the Bulldogs improved its record to 4-3, 2-1 with the victory.
First Quarter
Queen City won the toss and elected to receive the football to begin the game.
A nice return by Quiyon Ellison put the Bulldogs near midfield at its own 49-yard line.
On the first play from scrimmage, QC quarterback Clint Wiley connected with Ellison on a nice 31-yard gain. On the play Ellison extended and made a nice one-handed catch.
Jeremiah Drayton took the second snap of the drive 15 yards followed by a 4-yard run by Wiley.
Working from the 1-yard line Drayton crossed the goal line with 10:37 showing on the clock.
He also ran in the 2-point conversion and QC was up 8-0.
Ore City recovered an onside kick attempt by the Bulldogs and had great field position at the 49.
Great coverage on the drive by Ke’Idie Harrison and Manasseh Drayton helped the QC defense hold the Rebels to -12 yards and a turnover on downs.
Working from the Ore City 38, J. Drayton covered all of those yards for a touchdown in three plays; the latter being a 19-yard jaunt to the endzone.
J. Drayton once again converted the 2-point try and QC was up 16-0 with 8:31 left in the first quarter.
More solid play by the Bulldogs’ defense helped Ore City into a quick four-and-out as the Rebels turned the ball over on downs.
Queen City’s next drive stalled and the Bulldogs were forced to punt the ball away, but an interception by M. Drayton gave the Bulldogs the ball back at the Ore City 43.
Wiley connected with his brother Brayden Wiley for 13 yards on the drive, but the Bulldogs turned the ball over on downs a few plays later.
The quarter ended with Ore City reeling off a big pass play to get deep into Bulldog country.
Second Quarter
The Rebels got as close as the QC 18-yard line but a big sack by Delvon Federick and two incompletepasses gave the Bulldogs the ball with 9:54 left in the first half.
On the first play of QC’s new drive, M. Drayton took the rock eight yards followed by a 17-yard pass play from Wiley to Rylee Green.
The Bulldog’s drive stalled near midfield and Ore City took control of the ball at its own 41.
A big sack by Harrison and stellar defense by Alex Shelton and Aaron Jones helped stand Ore City up to turning the ball over on downs.
Working from the Ore City 42, J. Drayton carried the ball eight yards before Wiley passed the ball to Drayton who connected with Ellison on a 34-yard strike for a score.
The 2-point play was no good but QC extended its lead to 22-0 with 5:09 left in the second frame.
Solid play on defense by Kaden Satterfield and Clint Wooding once again forced Ore City into a quick out as the Rebels punted the ball away to QC with 3:53 left in the first half.
The next three drives of the first half could have resulted in QC going up by 14 more points without the PATs involved, but the Bulldogs only put two on the board.
On Queen City’s next drive after the punt, J. Drayton put the Bulldogs at the 9-yard line after rolling 46 yards on just one play.
Drayton put in another 5-yard gain but Ore City’s defense stood tall and forced a turnover on downs with 1:39 left on the clock.
Working from the 5-yard line, Ore City was pushed back to the 1-yard line on one play and Harrison tackled the Ore City ball carrier in the endzone on the next play for a safety.
QC was up 24-0 with 1:56 left in the second stanza and was set to receive the ball back.
The Bulldogs executed a near-perfect scoring drive as Wiley hit Ellison again for 14 yards and J. Drayton took the ball from the 26 to the 11 on a nice 15-yard run.
Facing third down from the 11-yard line, J. Drayton bolted towards the goal line but fumbled the ball before he crossed it and Ore City recovered.
The half ended on a short run by the Rebels. Third Quarter
Ore City caught its breath at halftime and came out swinging on its first drive of the second half.
A near-fumble on the first play from scrimmage nearly ended Ore City’s drive but, the Rebels connected on a big pass to take the ball from its own 26 to the QC 21.
The QC defense stood tall and kept the Rebels out of the endzone but a successful 23-yard field goal set the score at 24-3 with 8:16 left in the third quarter.
QC’s next drive was wrought with stellar plays as J. Drayton picked up 21 yards on the ground, Wiley hit Ellison for 18 yards and Federick ran for eight yards.
A sack, a penalty and two incomplete passes on the drive stopped the Bulldogs’ march to the endzone at the Ore City 30.
Ore City’s next drive didn’t last long as Federick stepped in front of a pass and completed the 43-yard pick-6 interception with a TD.
J. Drayton completed the 2-point play and QC widened the gap to 32-3.
Queen City’s defense continued to play lights out and forced a turnover on downs during the Rebels’ next drive.
J. Drayton took the initial handoff 36 yards before Wiley capped off the drive with a 9-yard scamper into the endzone.
The 2-point play was no good but QC had a 38-3 lead with 47 seconds left on the clock.
The quarter ended with Ore City losing five yards on a designed run play.
Fourth Quarter
Ore City did eventually pour its way into Bulldog country on its drive, but the hope for points ended when Remington Gardner intercepted a pass.
The Bulldogs wasted no time in getting over the 50-yard line as J. Drayton ran for eight yards, Kaden Fincher ran for 18 yards and Wiley connected with Green for 16 yards.
Unfortunately, for the ’Dawgs, the drive ended a few plays later.
Ore City once again drove deep into Bulldog territory on its next drive despite a nice play on defense by James Obenosky.
Once again the Bulldogs forfeited another TD on the eighth play of the drive.
Facing second-and-goal, Ore City’s QB was picked off by Federick who raced 95 yards for a touchdown, but a penalty by the Bulldogs negated the score.
Gardner came in at QB in the waning seconds of the game and picked up 10 yards on a QB scramble.
From that point the Bulldogs were in victory formation until time expired.
Wiley passed for 125 yards, J. Drayton had 200 yards on the ground with two touchdowns and a 34- yard touchdown pass, Ellison picked up 108 receiving yards, Rylee Green added 31 receiving yards and Federick had a pick-6.
QC’s defense was solid as Ore City was in the negatives when it came to running the ball.
The only positives was a few big pass plays but allin-all only netted them three points.
Queen City travels to Waskom this Friday night to take on the Wildcats.
Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
