Bulldogs edge New Diana Eagles, 32-27, in district play
Queen City picked up a big 32-27 win over New Diana last Friday night in district play, but the score was not indicative of how the Bulldogs played.
The margin could have been a lot wider if three scores weren’t called back because of penalties and two lost fumbles.
Nonetheless QC put up 330 yards on the ground and 480 yards total.
The Bulldogs got on the board first after QB Clint Wiley hit Quiyon Ellison on a 52-yard touchdown.
Jeremiah Drayton ran in the 2-point play and QC was up 8-0 with 7:36 left in the first quarter.
QC extended its lead to 14-0 after Drayton bolted across the goal line from 78 yards out with just under four minutes left in the opening quarter of play.
New Diana scored at the 3:25 mark but the PAT was no good and the score stood at 14-6.
The Bulldogs scored again when Drayton galloped 50 yards for another TD with 9:12 left in the first half.
Although the PAT was unsuccessful QC extended its lead to 20-6.
The Eagles scored the next two TDs of the game and after kicking through two successful PATs the score was tied at 20-all with 3:44 left in the third frame.
Drayton scored on another long jaunt; this time from 63 yards out.
The 2-point play was no good but QC was back on top 26-20 with 41 seconds lefty in the third quarter.
Drayton scored again in the final stanza on an 8-yard scramble and with the unsuccessful 2-point try the Bulldogs still led 32-20 with just over three minutes left in the game.
New Diana scored almost two minutes later and pulled within 32-27 at the 1:18 mark after the successful PAT.
The Bulldogs were able to stave off any other attempt at an Eagles’ comeback.
Drayton rolled up 265 yards and four touchdowns, Wiley had 150 yards passing with a score, Ellison posted 66 yards receiving and a touchdown and Rylee Green added 40 receiving yards.
Queen City hosts Ore City this Friday night with kickoff slated for 7:30 p.m.
