William R. and Mollie Bobo

Part 2 of 2

William Richard “Buddy” Bobo was born in Cass County 08 March 1872 and lived in the Knight Bluff Community all his life. He married Mollie TURNER 16 March 1897. She was born 14 November 1880 in the Forest Hill Community to William and Haden Antoinette HELDT Turner. They were farmers all their life. They build their home and own land in the Knights Bluff Community. After the crops were gathered, Mr. Buddy (PaPa as some grandkids called him) would go to the store in the fall and buy sugar and flour in 50 lb. bags. This would be enough to last all winter.

In the fall PaPa would cut the fire wood for the winter. Hard wood for the fire place and pine for the cook stove. The pine would be cut about 20 inches long and slabbed and hauled to the house. These slabs would be cut into pieces about 1 1/2-inch square for the cook stove. MaMa did all the cooking on a wood burning cook stove until PaPa died. This is where they raised their nine children, eight to adult hood plus two granddaughters. After the wood was cut and hauled to the house it was time to butcher the hogs. This would usually last three or more days. PaPa cut all his meat up and would cure the hog sides in salt and the hams would be sugar cured. This would take about thirty days. After the hams were cured some were hung and smoked. The women would make lye soap, cook hominy in the washpot outside, making hog head cheese, cook out the lard from the hogs. The fat and skin that the lard was made from was drained and used for crackling cornbread.

Mr. Buddy was always jolly and kidding the grandchildren all the time. I never remember him shaving himself. His wife or one of his children would shave him. Dorothy and Doris Stone lived with their grandparents and would share in the duty of shaving Mr. Buddy.

William died 01 February 1945 and Mollie died 15 November 1967 and they are buried in the Antioch Cemetery.
