Local church helps with Hurricane Ida

Several members of GT Church left Texarkana on September 9 with four pallets of water and supplies to Louisiana in order to assist the Cajun Navy & Hope community church from the damage caused by Hurricane Ida. Loads of food, toilet paper, shoes, medical, cleaning and disinfectant supplies were unloaded by a team of people from the church.

Hurricane Ida was a deadly and destructive Category 4 hurricane that became the second-most damaging hurricane to make landfall in the U.S. state of Louisiana on record behind Hurricane Katrina. Ida is the sixth-costliest tropical cyclone on record, having caused at least $50.1 billion in damages. As of September 15, a total of 116 deaths have been confirmed in relation to Ida, 30 in Louisiana.

The GT Disaster Relief team at GT Church in Atlanta TX began September 7, 2021, collecting non-perishable foods, cleaning supplies, flashlights, batteries, etc. to deliver to South Louisiana. They were originally contacted by The Cajun Navy to be the area drop-off location for this area.

Some of they asked for were gas, bottled water, water jugs, tarps/nails, zip ties/bungees, Gatorade, diapers, wipes, Clorox wipes, flashlights, batteries, pads/tampons, toilet paper, paper plates, plastic utensils, toiletries, first aid, non-perishable food items, pet food, baby formula/ baby food, insect repellent, rapid tests, bleach, work gloves, personal protective equipment, and trash bags.

Keith and Anita Hampton made a plea to the community, and they were thankful our community came together to help the people of Louisiana. When asked why they decided to take on the task, Keith explained that was just part of the vision for the church. “We are a church serving the community in need”
