Coleman display to be dedicated
A ceremony will be held at the Hall-Miller Municipal Airport in Atlanta on August 28th at 10 a.m. to dedicate a new Bessie Coleman memorial display, sponsored by the East Texas Republican Women. The display will contain a Bessie Coleman doll and several books about the first African-American female to obtain a pilot’s license.
Born in Atlanta on January 26, 1892, Coleman was known as Queen Bess and became a sought-after stunt pilot who performed all over the world. She died on April 30, 1926 when her plane crashed while practicing for a stunt show.
Atlanta Mayor Travis Ransom will be make a presentation declaring August 28 as “Bessie Coleman Day.” Michael Hill of Dallas, Executive Director of the Bessie Coleman Foundation, will also be in attendance. If her schedule permits, GiGi Coleman, Bessie’s great niece, will also attend and give a presentation as Bessie.
The public is invited and encouraged to attend the ceremony, which will take place inside the terminal.
