Rabbit netters compete at district, make regionals
Last week Atlanta’s tennis team competed in district play.
Six teams and more than 50 players competed for a chance to go to regionals by being one of the top two players in their event.
This consisted of boys’ and girls’ singles, boys’ and girls’ doubles and mixed doubles.
After two long days Atlanta brought home the district trophy for the boys’ team and after tying with Redwater Atlanta brought home second place for girls as Redwater just edged the Lady Rabbs out in games won.
In boys’ singles Sam Jones took first place and qualified for regionals with Will Porterfield placing fourth. In girls’ singles Gabby Rigdon placed second and qualified for regionals. In boys’ doubles Landon Moore and Jackson Dillinger, having to play every match since they were not seeded, took first and qualified for regionals.
Finally in mixed doubles Jake Carter and Jairy Medina placed second qualifying for regionals with Alex Jones and Yarithza Sanchez placing third which casts them as first alternates to regionals.
“As a coach I could not be prouder of these players,” Head Coach Stuart Drake said. “But the one thing that stuck out during the district tournament, more than these players competitive play, was the fact that I had several parents and coaches come to me to compliment Atlanta’s players’ sportsmanship and that it was one of the best tournaments they have attended.”
