Atlanta Iron competes in Redwater Dual Meet

With COVID-19 changing the landscape for sports, powerlifting definitely took a hit.

If you’ve never been to a powerlifting meet the host building is packed full of coaches, officials, lifters and parents.

The numbers can easily spike to 100 or more people stuffed in a building depending on the size of said structure.

What is normally a meet full of other schools, Atlanta Iron and Redwater’s powerlifting program competed against one another in the Redwater Dual Meet Feb. 1.

Both of these programs have been very successful on the powerlifting stage for some time, and it showed as the evening progressed.

Based on body weight, Trey Adams placed second overall in the 242-pound weight class with a total of 1,525 pounds lifted, Tyrell King placed fourth in the 308’s with a total lift of 1,630 pounds, DK Parker placed ninth in the 181’s with a total lift of 1,150 pounds, Avery Whitlow placed 10th in the 123’s with a total lift of 795 pounds and Clay Fant placed tenth in the 242-pound weight class with a total lift of 1,270 pounds.

These lifters didn’t place in their respective weight class but posted some solid numbers: Ty Blizzard – 1,225 pounds, Isaiah Harrison – 1,165 pounds, Caden Walker – 1,150 pounds, Josiah Hunt – 670 pounds, Brendan Clayton – 970 pounds, Carlos Cortez – 1,020 pounds, Wes Kennedy – 905 pounds, Junior Hartman – 1,010 pounds, Dezarion Parker – 980 pounds, Deaundre Mitchell – 905 pounds, Austin Phelps – 625 pounds, Kayne Simmons – 835 pounds, Adrick Patterson – 795 pounds, Corbin Wilson – 825 pounds and Adrian Kennington – 920 pounds.

Head Coach Craig Fant had this to say about the meet and his lifters overall. “Redwater hosted a good meet. They have a good program, strong team and a really nice weight room,” Fant said. “We feel both teams will make some noise at regionals so it was good to lift against each other last night.

“It was very competitive and we were excited about the progress we have made since our first meet,” Fant added. “The older guys had some really big totals and it was exciting to watch our young guys compete and continue to improve.”
