Rabbit lifters take first in Atlanta Iron Varsity Invite
The powerlifting landscape looks different this year due to COVID-19. The number of schools competing at meets has been whittled down.
Last year the 2020 Powerlifting State Championship was canceled due to the virus so lifters and coaches alike are hoping for a complete year.
Atlanta has no shortage of state qualifiers since the program began and this year got off to a good start as Atlanta Iron won first place over Carthage and Waskom in the Atlanta Iron Varsity Invitational Jan. 14.
Trey Adams lifted a total of 1,445 pounds and placed first in his weight class, Tyrell King placed second in his weight class with a total lift of 1,530 pounds, DK Parker placed third with a total of 1,150 pounds lifted, Ty Blizzard placed fourth in his class with a total of 1,220 pounds lifted, Clay Fant tied for sixth in his class with a total of 1,230 pounds lifted, Adrian Kennington tied for sixth with a total of 940 pounds lifted and Avery Whitlow tied for sixth in his respective weight class with a total lift of 765 pounds.
Atlanta Iron Head Coach Craig Fant had this to say after the meet.
“We were excited about our totals for the first meet. Like everything else, powerlifting is a bit different due to COVID-19 this year. We are doing smaller meets with several protocols in place.”
“We had 25 older, varsity lifters last night, and gave medals based on their total and body weight,” Fant added. “It was exciting watching all the guys compete against each other on one platform. We will do the same thing on Jan. 21 with the younger JV guys.”
