Hughes Springs HAPPENINGS

The Chamber has chosen to put the Business Spotlight on The Plant Place. Robbie and Debra Higginbotham have opened this garden center/gift shop at 1504 E 1st St in Hughes Springs. Some of the items they sell in the garden center are flowers, trees, and hanging baskets. They will have seasonal plants throughout the year. The gift shop has candles, baskets, and home décor.

Robbie and Debra started R&D Wholesale in 1997. Debra delivers tropical plants to local florists in a 100- mile radius of Hughes Springs and Robbie is also a truck driver. The Plant Place is part of their retirement plan to get them off the road and to stay at home more.

CITY NEWS

Hughes Springs Receives Funding for Housing Program

The City of Hughes Springs has received a HOME Investment Partnerships Program grant from the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs to build new houses for low-income homeowners.

The purpose of the HOME Program is to expand the supply of decent, safe, and affordable housing for low-income households. The program provides funds to demolish substandard housing and build a new home on the same site. To qualify for the program, homeowners must live in a substandard home, reside within the city limits of Hughes Springs, own their own home, be current on their property taxes, have no liens or encumbrances on their property, and have an income at or below 80% of the Cass County median income. Income limits are listed in the attached information sheet.

There is no cost to the homeowner to participate in the HOME Program. The assistance is provided in the form of a conditional grant for five years or a deferred forgivable loan 15 years. If the homeowner sells their home within that time period, they must repay a portion of the cost of the home. After that time period, the grant or loan is forgiven.

Applications for the HOME program are available at Hughes Springs City Hall, 603 E. 1st Street. An online application is available at bit.ly/HughesSpringsHOMEApp. Applicants who complete an application and provide all necessary documentation will be contacted for an interview and verification of information. The grant extends over a three-year period. Qualified residents are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. For more information about the HOME Program, contact the City of Hughes Springs at (903) 639-7519 or Kathy Boyles at (903) 276-4995.

Car registration renewals are available at city hall. Your registration cannot be past due, and you must bring proof of insurance and inspection. Please see Glenda Russell.
