Jones signs Letter of Intent to play ball for ETBU
Atlanta baller Cyrah Jones signed her Letter of Intent to play basketball for East Texas Baptist University in Marshall July 30.
Jones was a force and a leader on the court for the Lady Rabbits during her high school playing days, and that sentiment was echoed by Lady Rabbs’ basketball coach Billy Brewer.
“Cyrah was both a leader and good player for us and has the potential to be a really good player moving forward,” Brewer said. “She was someone I depended on down the stretch to get the ball to. She became that person we all depended on. She led by example.”
Coach Brewer had nothing but praise for Cyrah on this special day.
“She was one of the first players I talked to when I first came to Atlanta last year and I’m going to miss her,” Brewer added. “She did a fantastic job for us, I enjoyed coaching her and I know she’s going to do really well in college. I told her college is different and she’ll have to put in more work than she did in high school. I’m proud of her for getting the chance to play basketball at the next level.”
Of course Cyrah is excited about the opportunity and reminisced on her most memorable moment at AHS.
“My most memorable moment was my freshman year when my coach called me over and asked ‘do you think you could play on the varsity team?’ and I was surprised by the question. I answered him ‘yes’ but he said I sounded doubtful so he asked me again ‘do you think you could play on the varsity team?’ and I told him ‘yes sir’ and knew from that day I’d have to work harder than I’ve ever worked before and improve my work ethic,” Jones said.
Playing four years of varsity ball is an honor in some cases due to most freshman are still raw and need a little refining.
That moment was a huge confidence boost for her and signing to play ball in college just strengthens that confidence even more.
“It has been an amazing process and my college coach told me it was going to be way different from high school but I want to push myself and grow in basketball at ETBU,” Jones remarked. “My college coach took my words and told me ‘we will grow together both physically and spiritually’ because it is a Baptist college. As a team we will bond both on the court and off the court as we attend chapel and everything.”
With a scholarship in place Jones will no doubt help the Lady Tigers in many ways both on and off the court, and she already has a great plan in place as she continues her journey in life.
“At ETBU I’m going to major in kinesiology and athletic training and once I get my degree I’m going to join the Air Force and become a captain. Those are my plans and I’m looking forward to the future,” Jones said.
Jones is just who the Air Force is looking for; someone who will lead, work hard and has an immeasurable work ethic.
