A gift was given to the citizens of Linden, Texas last year in the form of their very first Public Library. New director Denise Haas held a new Re-Grand Opening on June 20 and has introduced new expanded hours and activities for area kids.

The shelves are full of books, with a big children’s room and play area, and a designated Genealogy Room run by Kaye Stephens, who donated the building – her childhood home. It was built in 1924 and sits just under the old water tower, made famous on the cover of Don Henley’s album Cass County.

So far, Denise has held a Kids Craft Day, and this past Saturday a “Meet the Police and DA” event. A local teacher meets students for tutoring sessions there, and members are welcome to utilize the computer system to print out documents.

“Everyone has their technology – cell phones, tablets, computers – but there’s nothing like the smell and feel of a book,” said Denise.

The Summer Reading Program got a late start this year, but Denise has plans to continue the service, at least on an every-other Saturday basis. “Kids can come and have popcorn, get treats and have a good time,” she said. “And it will give parents a break.”

The Friends of the Library is a group of women that have banded together to help with “anything we may need.” Kaye runs the genealogy room and helps find family history. “She just does fabulous work,” said Denise.

The new library hours are: Monday-Friday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Saturday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.; and on Tuesdays and Thursdays they are also open 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. Upcoming events will be posted in the Journal-Sun.

“The library is a fun place to be,” Denise remarked. “There is something here for everyone.”
