Claire Bates

If you can remember, what were you expecting from this weekend?

One of my friends had experienced RYLA two years before I received the honor of being chosen to attend. Therefore, I thought I knew what to expect, however, that was not the case. There were so many surprises I got to experience along my RYLA journey. I am so glad that I did not know what to expect from this weekend, it made it more fun and exciting.

Had you met the other local students (from other county schools) before going?

I did not know who was going from other local schools, but once we got on the bus to leave I knew just about everyone. If I didn’t know someone, we were great friends by the end of the weekend.

Do you keep in touch with them…or with your new group at RYLA?

I talk with the kids I met at RYLA and the ones from our local schools every now and then to catch up a little bit; especially during these hard times, we are in today.

What was your name at RYLA?

My name at RYLA was Hershey!

Why was this name important?

Hershey was my name at RYLA because on the day I arrived at RYLA I had socks on with Hershey kisses on them. Names are important at RYLA because it gives you a chance to escape reality and give your teammates a look into your personality.

What was the most challenging part of the RYLA experience?

The most challenging part of RYLA was going out of my comfort zone, but I am so glad I did! I conquered a ropes course, went through an obstacle course while being blindfolded, and trusted other people to catch me when I fell.

How has this experience impacted you after you came home?

Since I came home from RYLA, I have learned that sometimes you are going to fail, but you have to keep your head up and conquer the challenge the next day.

What have you changed in your interactions with others at your school?

Since I have gotten back from RYLA, I am encouraging people at school to not be afraid to try new things.

How do you think your future will be impacted by this RYLA experience? (that may be a really big question! And impossible!)

I want to become a teacher one day, so I will definitely take what I learned from my RYLA experience and share it with the kids I teach.

What changes have your parents seen since this experience?

Since Claire’s RYLA experience, we have seen a big boost in her confidence level. She has taken on new challenges and dealt with some adverse situations in a positive way. Claire often references her experiences at RYLA as she is discussing plans for her future with us. We are very thankful to the Rotary Club for allowing her to have this wonderful experience! - Curt & Kendra Bates.
