HSISD Board approves revised calendar

Hughes Springs students will begin school August 13 after the board approved a revised calendar for the upcoming school year. Teachers will return to work Aug. 6 on the revised calendar.

The revised school calendar, presented to the board at their regular meeting June 8, has instructional make-up days added due to the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic. Those days were added in the event that instructional days were missed as a result of the virus and a TEA waiver for missed days is not available. The board voted unanimously to approve the revised calendar.

The board opened the meeting with the oath of office being administered to elected board members. Secretary to the Superintendent Nita Clark, a notary public, administered the oath of office to Billy Willis and Phillip Chapman, who were both unopposed in the election that was scheduled to take place May 2. Robert Johnson, who ran unopposed to replace retiring Rick Nelson, and DeAnna Putman, who was unopposed in her bid to fill the unexpired term vacated by Bill Lindsey, were not in attendance and will be sworn in at the July meeting.

In other business, the board voted to approve new curriculum for Hughes Springs High School. The new courses include Sports medicine I, Sports Medicine II, and Sports Medicine III will be taught by the new athletic trainer, who is working through the summer to take the classes required to teach. The new courses willb e added in an incremental basis, with only Sports Medicine being offered in 2020-2021. The second year, Sports Medicine II will be added, and third year will see the availability of Sports Medicine III become open.

The board meets the second Monday of each month at the Administration Building, located at 871 Taylor Street in Hughes Springs.
