Schools extend closure by 30 days

Independent school districts within the counties of Cass and Morris have extended school closures to May 1 according to similar announcements made by superintendents Sydney Harrist of Atlanta ISD and Keri Winters of Linden-Kildare ISD.

Harrist and Winters cited the latest guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and the federal government’s social distancing recommendations.

“The current plan is to return to school on Monday, May 4, 2020,” Harrist said.

Harrist said the districts continue to ge updates from the Texas Education Agency as to what they can expect schools to do and students to receive grades and credit.

“If any parent or student needs help please contact their teacher or principal so we can provide you with whatever you need,” Harrist said.

According to the Texas Education Agency (TEA), it continues to work with the Office of the Governor, Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) and the Texas Division of Emergency Managemen (TDEM) to coordinate and plan the state’s response to COVID-19.

“TEA’s role in these eforts is to help coordinate the flow of information from the state to districts, help districts solve problems, and provid guidance that will aid in districts’ decision-making. TEA does not have the general authority to close schools for matters related to health. This authority lies with the local health authority, DSHS, and the Governor of Texas.”

Winters said in her announcement, “This situation is not ideal for any of us. My kids are restless and really anxious to see their teachers and friends as I’m sure you guys are too.”

“We are a family that is constantly on the go and it has made us slow down and stay home. As of now, Cass County is not labeled ‘shelter in place’, but both Bowie and Gregg County are. We will continue to deliver meals each day for those that need or want them but we will limit the number of people we send on the buses. Al of the staff that ride th routes do so on a voluntary basis because the too are missing their kids!!”

Harrist said that no decisions have been mad regarding graduation— which is eight week away.

“I can assure you tha we will do everything we can to have the activities for the students.”

“It is hard to answer all the questions at this point as things change from day to day,” Harrist said.

Harrist and Winter thanked everyone fo their patience and hard work and encouraged positivity amid the uncertainty.
