Citizens work to restore ballfield
A group of hardworking Linden citizens have begun to restore the old Legion Hall baseball field to a useable state. The work began as an effort to make the site function as a training field for a 12 & Under Linden softball team named “Total Chaos” that will be playing in an Atlanta, Texas softball league this season.
Led by the team’s coaches Caleb & Whitney Goebel and Jon Stiger as well as a parent of one of the players, Larry Allen, the group is working to overhaul the abandoned ball field and make it once again useable for play. The work they will be doing will consist of taking grass out of the in-field and pulling up weeds within the field. They will also be conducting some beautification to the site and the surrounding bleachers and dugouts. Other possible work discussed even includes potentially installing functioning restrooms in the former concession stands at the field.
In years past, the Legion Hall baseball field was utilized by a 14 & Under boy’s baseball team as their home field. However, as the concept of youth “travel ball” gained popularity, the field was used less and less and was eventually abandoned.
Aside from use by the new youth team themselves, the group hopes that—once restored to its former glory, the site will be used by citizens of all ages for recreation and comradery. They are also keen on developing the field for common use so that it can factor in with other recreational sites around the city to promote more active lifestyles for Linden and its people.
The group is looking for the community to rally around this new project in any way possible. Financial sponsors may be sought out in the future with advertising opportunities being made available on the fence enclosing the field and the city of Linden has already committed to keeping the field mowed while it remains in use.
