Fire closes local bakery
Fire has devastated another local business in Atlanta. Kremy Donuts, located at 702 US Hwy 59, sustained smoke and fire damage on the evening of Feb. 16.
Soksambo Ngor, who owns the bakery with his mother and father, was alerted to the fire, remotely, by the building’s alarm system. He received notification on his mobile phone. “It was calling me. Something hap-pening to the store alarm. We check it out and then it just start smoking:’
Ngor and his parents have owned the bakery for three of the ten years since its opening--having purchased it from his uncle near their arrival in Atlanta from Dallas. The Ngors immigrated to the United States from Cambodia in 2012.
As first-time business owners, they had found their niche in a community that they proudly call home.
He said, “I love Atlanta! Everybody is nice! The community is good!”
There have been many inquiries made to the Ngors of their wellbeing since the fire-- having received phone calls from patrons and friends alike.
“They say, ‘How you doing, you alright?’ Everybody just nice’
Coping with the loss of his family’s sole source of income has been trying, and the uncertainty about when he can move forward with reopening compounds his anxiety.
Ngor lamented, “It’s been difficult, surprising, nervous:’
Renovation is planned although pending the outcome of the investigation. At present, the cause is undetermined. The Ngors do not own the building which houses their bakery and could not provide further information about renovations.
When asked how soon they would reopen, Ngor said, “As soon as possible. Hopefully in the next week or next couple weeks”
Ngor made it clear that he and his family are ready to get back to work and promised to keep the community posted as to when they will reopen Kremy Donuts.
