Queen City ISD’s Santa Slam event a heartwarming success

Normally, when fans throw things onto the court at a basketball game, it’s a bad thing, but that wasn’t the case at Eugene Sloan Memorial Gym last Tuesday night.

The Lady Bulldog and Bulldog basketball teams in a joint effort with the cheerleaders hosted the First Annual Santa Slam during the match up with the McLeod Longhorns.

Fans from both teams were encouraged to bring a stuffed toy to gain admission to the game and then throw the toys onto the court when the Bulldogs scored their first points of the game.

After the first Bulldog bucket, the gym floor was quickly littered with all kinds and sizes of stuffed animals. Cheerleaders from both schools hurried to collect all the toys, so that the game could continue.

The success of the event was a heartwarming example of the Christmas spirit and provided an example of kindness and generosity.

Cheer Coach Lisa Droddy shared, “These kids are the future of Cass County and an event like Santa Slam encourages them to give back to their community.”

On Friday morning of last week, representatives from both teams, along with the Queen City Cheer Squad delivered 175 stuffed toys to Cass County Bank.

Representatives from the United States Marine Corps were on hand to accept the donation along with Cass County Toys for Tots liaison, Megan Adcock.

Mrs. Adcock said, “I was just blown away at the number of toys brought to a basketball game. I’m so excited to continue partnering with our schools to make this program even more successful. Hopefully, these students today were able to get a glimpse of the difference they helped make in their community.”
