Truths to remember this Christmas season
1-You will love it.
Friends, family, music, presents, reminders of God’s great Gift, holidays, decorations, just to mention a few; seriously, who doesn’t enjoy the things that come with Christmas?
It seems like much of the best things of life are given more emphasis at this time of the year. Some like to proudly wear the title of “Grinch,” but even he saw the truth through his hard shell.
2-You will hate it.
Friends, family, music, presents, decorations, . . . I’ll stop there. I love looking at Christmas decorations. I almost fell off the roof putting ours up. I love getting and giving presents. I, like you, spent way too much for my pocketbook. I love the music. Well, most of it, most of the time. I love family and friends and all the get-togethers. I’ll stop there! Don’t want to get in any more trouble than necessary.
3-You’ll be too busy.
Every class, group, organization, or family that you are a part of will plan a party. The first couple of weeks in December are almost always crammed full of parties, events, dinners, or something. Churches plan extra activities. Schools plan extra events. You hardly have to plan anything on your own. It will take care of itself.
4-You’ll eat too much of the wrong things.
Turkey and dressing and ham are one thing. Pies, candies, fruit cake, (Really? Fruitcake? Have you tasted that thing? Have you weighed that thing?), cookies. All the good stuff. All the stuff that gets started around Thanksgiving and ends about Jan. 3. I’m too fat and too heavy. Actually, I’m just too short for my weight! Doesn’t look like it’ll improve for at least the next month or so, but isn’t it fun.
5-More people are exposed to Jesus Christ than at any other time of the year.
Think about it. Even for the irreligious, the nonreligious, or just the Scrooges in life, Christmas is about Christ.
They might not spend a lot of time thinking about that, but the truth is still the truth. Everyone is exposed to Christmas songs; the radio, in the stores, almost everywhere you go! And from now until the day after Christmas, it is Christmas songs.
I know Rudolph, White Christmas and Jingle Bells aren’t spiritual songs, but much of what we listen to is based on the true Christmas message. Because of this, more people, even without knowing it, are exposed to Jesus Christ than at any other time of the year. What a great opportunity for followers of Jesus to capitalize on an opportunity handed to us.
6-The old, old, story never gets old.
It might seem like we’ve heard every sermon, read every book, and listened to every song about Christmas. Matthew 1 and 2, and Luke 1 and 2 get read and preached from every December. The choir and kids will do their musicals. Mrs. Smith will sing “Oh Holy Night” for the 40th year in a row, and the men’s choir will sing “O Beautiful Star of Bethlehem” once again. And we wouldn’t want it any other way. Why? Because the old, old story never gets old. It is a good thing to be reminded of how Jesus came to earth. It is a good thing to be reminded of why Jesus came to earth.
7-O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord.
