LEDC Update

There is new blood in the LEDC office! At the beginning of last week, we welcomed Authur Kimmel on as the organization’s new Executive Assistant. Authur will play a crucial support role here at the LEDC with responsibilities ranging from managing communications to ensuring that the office keeps running along at full steam!

I’m planning on convincing Authur to participate in a little “welcome to the city” interview with the Sun, so be on the lookout for that in the near future. Otherwise, swing by the office and say “hi” to our newest staff member if you get the chance!

A question I’ve been asked with some frequency by community members in recent weeks has been, “Why isn’t the water tower lighting up at night?” So, if you haven’t heard the answer to this question yet, here it is. It’s because the lighting system has been temporarily taken down! But don’t fret! It’s only a temporary measure. Beginning at the end of September, the water tower has been undergoing a different type of “facelift.”

The tower is currently being powder coated and preserved for longevity. The process is being conducted in order to reinforce the structural integrity of the tower by eliminating existing rust and preventing further rusting from taking place.

Additionally, all substances being used in the process are approved by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and the National Sanitation Foundation. That means that should we ever need to utilize the historic water tower in a utility capacity in the future, we will be in complete compliance with State and Federal requirements.

The lights were taken down at the request of our contractor as they were afraid that the coating process might have an adverse effect on the complex lighting system. So, fear not! Linden will shine again! Work is already underway on the interior of the water tower and we’ve been assured by the contractors that the work will be complete and the lights will be back up in time for Christmas.\

In the meantime, the downtown decorations for fall are looking great! I actually had the privilege of helping hang some particularly spooky ornaments from the roof of a downtown business at this past Second Saturday. I won’t say which building I climbed on top of, but if you happen to see the ornaments I’m referring to, you’ll know it. I’m just glad I didn’t take a fall off of that roof. I could’ve broken a bone! Or even hurt myself in the process!

We have a lot of fun events coming up, so come out and get involved! There will be a free tasting event downtown this Saturday the 19th from 3 to 5 p.m. followed by a blues concert at Music City Texas Theater starting at 7:30. This is all taking place as our celebration of T-Bone Walker Day—a local holiday to honor a great musician native to our city. We’ve got Trunk or Treat coming up on Halloween evening on the square.

The Linden Lion’s Club is also having its pumpkin carving/decorating contest again this year. It’s only $5 to enter, so grab a gourd, get to hacking, and take a stab at winning that $100 grand prize!

The weather has finally caught up with the season and it feels like fall outside, so come out and enjoy Linden!
