Queen City suffers defeat at home against Hooks
The Queen City Bulldogs were at home last Friday night against the Hooks Hornets. The Bulldogs fell to Winnsboro in the previous week while Hooks lost to Pewitt.
The Hornets received the opening kickoff and began their first drive near midfield.
On the sixth play of the series, Hooks found the end zone from 20 yards out to take an early lead.
Queen City was forced to punt on its opening drive but was able to force the Hornets to start the next drive inside their own 20-yard line.
The Bulldogs’ defense stood tall on the drive after giving up a 52-yard pass play.
Defensive lineman Derrick Alexander had a tackle which resulted in no gain and linebacker T’ Angelo Neal had two big defensive plays which resulted in a turnover on downs for Hooks.
The teams traded possessions until late in the first quarter. The Hornets scored their next two touchdowns on one-yard running plays.
Hooks would also go on to score on a six-yard running play giving themselves a 27-0 lead with 8:30 remaining in the second quarter.
Queen City began its second drive of the second quarter from its own 32-yard line.
Adorian Booth picked up 15 yards rushing on the first two plays and a pass interference call on Hooks landed the Bulldogs in the Hornets’ territory.
Damir Rascoe caught a pass for six yards and Booth caught one for 19 yards. On first down from Hooks’ 10-yard line, quarterback Dylan Scott found receiver Conner Alexander in the end zone for Queen City’s first touchdown of the night.
The PAT from Julian Rea was successful and the Bulldogs cut the Hornets’ lead to 20 with 4:41 remaining in the first half.
Hooks answered the Queen City touchdown with two of their own before the end of the first half to stretch its lead to 32 points at halftime.
Queen City was forced to turn the ball over on downs to open the second half and Hooks took advantage to score its first touchdown in the second half.
The Hornets went on to score another touchdown on a nine-yard run before the end of third quarter.
The score at that point was 53-7.
The Bulldogs forced the Hornets to punt early in the fourth quarter and took advantage of a mishandled snap.
Queen City began its next offensive drive on the Hornets’ nine-yard line. After two plays for big losses, the Bulldogs found themselves in a third-down-and-34 situation.
Scott took the snap and found receiver Josh Davis for a 34-yard touchdown. The two point try was successful by Rascoe and QC was down 53-15.
Hooks answered the Bulldogs’ scoring drive by returning the next kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown of their own.
With just under nine minutes remaining in the game, Queen City started its final drive of the night.
Scott had three consecutive runs for 18, 12, and 15 yards before tossing a pass to Rascoe for a fiveyard touchdown.
The PAT by Rea was successful and this was the final score of the night for either team as the board showed a final of 60-22.
The Bulldogs are on the road this Friday night Sept. 20, with a game against the New Diana Eagles. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at New Diana High School.
