Atlanta coaching staff hosts football camp for ninth year

Atlanta’s coaching staff hosted its ninth successful free Summer Youth Football Camp on July 24 and July 25 for kids ranging from first grade to ninth between the two days at the Atlanta High School practice field.

The coaches oversaw nearly 100 kids who learned several techniques and drills from the Rabbit coaching staff over two days in the heat of summer, and that hasn’t slowed the number of campers showing up at all.

From 2011 to this year more than 1,000 campers has attended the free camp.

The coaches covered and taught the campers everything such as going through warm-up activities, learning respect for their coaches and each other and coaching them on football skills and drills related to Rabbit championship football.

The campers also learned several different aspects of the game, from passing and receiving, falling on fumbles before the ball reaches the out of bounds line, effective tackling, stellar defense techniques and correct formations.

The coaches emphasize work, unity, tempo and effort to the kids who attend the camp, and they also try to instill a good work ethic for both the playing field and the classroom.

AD Matt McClure stressed to both groups the importance of doing their best in the classroom and let success there transition to the field.

McClure is entering his ninth year at Atlanta and as of this season the Rabbits have been four rounds into the state playoffs three of the past five years.

Atlanta is ranked third by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football staff and the future looks bright.

On the second day of the camp the first through sixth grade campers competed in a punt, pass and kick contest for each grade level and each group ran the 40-yard dash.

The first/second grade winners were as follows: kick contest winner and 40-yard dash winner –Cruz Crosby, punt and pass contest winner – Brody Rice.

The third/fourth grade winners were as follows: kick, pass and punt contest winner – Hayes Highland, 40-yard dash winner – Gaven Bumphus.

The fifth/sixth grade winner for all events was – Jayden Riley.

The Big Bull Awards went to Jaylen Finley, C.J. Rice and Noah Thornton, the Good Hands Awards went to Levi Clark, Braylen Bush and Janson Wiley, and the Defensive Hustle Awards went to Luke Martin, Jaiden Finley and Stone Cauley.
