Trahan is guest speaker at genealogical meet
Luci Trahan presented the program at the July meeting of Cass County Genealogical Society at Queen City United Methodist Church. Using PowerPoint, she spoke of her Trahan’s family’s trek from LaRochelle, France, to Grand Pre, Nova Scotia, to South Louisiana.
Her family crest depicts a strong arm and cocoon, illustrating the silk industry in which her early French ancestors were artisans who drew silk threads from the cocoons.
Trahan talked of her family’s hardships in Nova Scotia and their difficult trek to the bayous of St. Martin Parish, Louisiana. One grandfather, Zephirin Trahan, served in the militia from Vermillion Parish and participated in the Battle of New Orleans in 1815. Based on his service, she is a member of Mark Epperson Chapter of U.S. Daughters of 1812.
Another grandfather, Joseph Laissan Trahan, died while serving in the Confederacy in Mississippi. The earliest paternal photographs which she displayed were her grandfather and father.
An interesting artifact on display was her father’s French language baptismal certificate. A pleasant surprise for Trahan was the unexpected attendance of her son, Christophe.
