L-K band students participate in region band clinic
On the morning of January 26, 2018, Courtney Givens and Karlie Smith left the Linden-Kildare High School to participate in the ATSSB two-day Region Band Clinic. These students auditioned to earn a spot, along with Marissa Tyson who was unable to attend, because of their outstanding skill.
Courtney Givens, a senior and seasoned clarinet player, who recently also played with the Four- States Concert Band in Texarkana was excited to be a part of yet another music challenge. Karlie Smith, a student at Mae Luster Stephens Junior High School, beamed with pride at having earned the privilege to go. She has been playing the baritone for three years. “I’m glad that I can finally be one of the kids that is good enough to compete. It makes me want to work harder to get first chair next time” said Karlie. Although her favorite song was “Shipwrecked” the final performance was anything but.
Region Band Clinic is highly competitive and the first step to all-state band. The students compete with 1A, 2A, and 3A schools from Paris to Mineola. They rehearsed Friday and Saturday with guest conductors from several colleges. The final concerts were performed at White Oak High School for the High School, and Sabine High School for the Junior High.
