Rabbs’ season ends with, 56-28, loss in bi-district tilt

Atlanta finished the regular season as the fourth-place team in District 7-4A, DII.
That pitted the Rabbs against 8-4A, DII champion Jasper in the bi-district round of the state playoffs which took place in Carthage last Friday night.
Atlanta opened the game with excellent progress and won the first half of the game.
Unfortunately, they didn’t score any in the second half of the contest as the Jasper Bulldogs went on to win, 56-28.

First Quarter

Atlanta opened the game with the ball on the 30-yard line.
Wideout Austin Brown took the ball eight yards on a sweep play followed by two short runs via running backs Jawan King and Dra Nelson.
Quarterback Andy Samples connected with Nelson on a 7-yard pass and a 3-yard run by King put the Rabbs at the Bulldog 48.
On the next snap Samples hit King for a 48-yard score to put Atlanta on the scoreboard first.
Fernando Campos split the uprights and the Rabbits had a, 7-0, lead with 9:38 left in the first quarter.
Jasper didn’t waste time moving the ball on its first possession as the running back slipped around the right side of the line on a sweep play and took the ball from the 37 to Atlanta’s 9-yard line.
After a penalty against Jasper the Bulldogs scored on a 14-yard TD pass the very next play.
The successful PAT tied the game at 7-all with 9:14 left in the first frame.
Atlanta broke out a trick play on the second play of the next drive as Samples flicked the ball to King who tossed the ball to receiver Kade Wood on what looked like a double-reverse.
Wood stopped and tossed the ball to Samples for a 37-yard gain.
Samples took the ball down to the Jasper six on his next carry, and King took it in from there at the 7:24 mark.
Campos hit the PAT and Atlanta was back on top by a score of, 14-7.
Atlanta’s stout defense showed up on the next drive as Jasper was driving across midfield.
On the fourth play of the drive Jasper fumbled and the Rabbs recovered the ball with 5:42 left on the clock.
Samples gained 23 yards and King 14 on the ground before Samples connected with Brown for a 37-yard score.
The PAT was good, and Atlanta increased its lead to, 21-7, with 3:12 left in the wild first quarter.
The opening quarter closed with Jasper in the redzone.

Second Quarter

Three plays into the new quarter and the Bulldogs scored again with 10:52 showing on the clock.
The PAT was good, and the Rabbit lead was, 21-14.
Atlanta had to punt on the next drive which set up another scoring drive for Jasper.
This one wouldn’t be without controversy.
A big run by the Bulldog tailback was marked at the 1-yard line after the runner stepped out of bounds.
On the run, however, the runner tried to extend the ball over the line and dropped the ball which went through the back of the endzone for an apparent touchback.
The officials thought he stepped out of bounds first and Jasper scored on the very next play.
The PAT tied the score at 21-all with 8:40 left in the first half.
A steady dose of Samples and King on Atlanta’s next possession took the ball from the 38 to Jasper’s 36.
From there Samples hit Brown for another TD.
The PAT put the Rabbs up, 28-21, with 4:54 left in the second stanza.
Two minutes, a big run and big pass later and Jasper was knocking on the door again.
The Bulldogs scored again with 2:40 left in the quarter but missed the PAT which left the score at, 28-27.
Atlanta had a great chance to score before the half ended as Jasper fumbled the ball away with 24 seconds on the clock and the ball sitting at the 38, but the Rabbits ran out of time.

Third Quarter

Jasper opened the second half by scoring a TD on a 5-play drive which ended with a 2-yard touchdown at the 9:48 mark.
The 2-point play was successful, and Jasper was up for the first time by a score of, 35-28.
Later in the quarter Atlanta received a bonus as Jasper fumbled the ball at the 3-yard line.
Unfortunately, a pick-6 put Jasper back on the board.
The PAT was good, and the Bulldogs were up, 42-28, with 5:13 left in the third quarter.
Jasper scored again with 33 seconds left in the third frame and went into the final quarter with a, 49-28, lead.

Fourth Quarter

Atlanta never found a rhythm in the second half like they had to begin the game.
Jasper scored again with 6:29 left in the contest and pushed the score to, 56-28.
The game ended with the Bulldogs kneeling the ball.
