Youth program Sept. 21 The Unity District Baptist Association, Linden, Texas will present The Wedding of Roses Youth Program on Sunday, September 21, 2025 at 3:00 p.m. The public is cordially invited to attend.

This week’s Cass County Pioneer is another baseball standout. Sloan Vernon George Washington was born in Linden, Texas, on June 4, 1907. Washington was known by the nickname “Vern.” He was an American professional baseball outfielder who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Chicago White Sox during the 1935 and 1936 seasons. In an interesting twist, Washington batted left-handed but threw the ball right-handed. Washington also had an extensive Minor League career, from 1931 to 1950. He played in an astonishing 1,793 games, across numerous teams, like the McCook Generals, the Baton Rouge Senators, the Fort Worth Cats, the Shreveport Sports, the Texarkana Bears, and more. Notably, while with the Texarkana Bears, he also served as the player manager.
