Some of the Joneses of Cass County
CHARLES AND SALLIE (CHRISTIAN) JONES Charles, a Jones from Madison Co., Georgia whom the people tried to “keep up with,” was born 8 May 1808, died 4 April 1882, Cass County, Texas. His grandfather was Col. Russell Jones (1738-1814), who was a Revolutionary Soldier. He owned a huge plantation in Georgia. His son, Thomas, who married Margaret Connally, built a home near Ft. Lamar in 1816, which Charles lived as a young boy. The bricks on and around this home were made by slaves. (Great-Great-Great Grandchildren in Cass County and elsewhere are proud owners of some of these bricks. The old home still stands and is occupied today.
Many of Charles’s sisters and uncles moved to Texas before Charles; some when Texas was a young Republic. They became wealthy from real estate. One such relative of Charles’ who became famous was a visitor to Cass County from time to time; he was one of Texas greatest politician for the state as well as national: U.S. Senator Tom Connally.
Charles married Sallie Christian in Georgia before coming to Texas after the Civil War, ca. 1869. Sallie was born 13 April 1811 in Georgia, died 12 Oct. 1895 in Cass County. They are both buried in the Laws Chapel cemetery.
After their move to Cass County, they purchased land in the Center Hill Community, between Bivins and Linden.
Their children were: Jane, married a Jones (She probably died in Georgia since Her two children, William and James, came to Texas with their Grandfather, Charles Jones); Terrell married Mary Hampton (in Georgia); Russell (died in a prison in Enterprise, Miss, after being captured at Vicksburg); Elizabeth married Drew McGinnis; Drury (Drew) married (1) Mrs. Mary (Taylor) Scott; (2) Grace Reeder; John married Sarah Frances Endsley; Margaret married John Lewis Stone; Emily married Jim Lundy; and Lou married Sidney Hall.
TERRELL AND MARY (HAMPTON) JONES Terrell (1835-1916) married Mary Hampton (18461900) in Georgia. They are both buried in the Bethlehem Cemetery in Cass County, Texas.
Terrell and Mary were both charter members of The Bethlehem Church. They gave the land to build the church and school at O’Farrell.
They had three daughters: Lou, who married 14 Nov. 1889, to John A. Washington; Mary “Mollie” Pearl, who married 9 June 1890, to Hansford H. Washington, the brother of John A. Washington; and Ruah married Everlee Daniels. Terrell joined the Confederate Army on 13 of May 1862. He was captured at Vicksburg, Mississippi, JOHN AND FANNIE (ENDSLEY) JONES John Jones, born 30 Jan. 1844, died 28 June 1920, married Sarah Frances “Fannie” Endsley, torn 6 June 1842, died 18 May 1934. They are both buried in the Salem Cemetery, two miles west of Bloomburg, Texas.
John and Fannie tore down the old Joseph Endsley homestead (Fannie’s father’s home) and built the home in which they are standing. in the picture, just fifty yards or so to the west of the original site. At least four generations of descendants were born in this home.
To this union were born: Annie (1870-1943), married Doss Newton; Sarah Blender “Ellen” (1873-1973), married John Alexander Haynes; Henry Allen (1876-1953) married (1) Ola Fitts; (2) Trudy Yates; John Belton (18801922) married Nan Wood; Joseph Neill (1883-1956) married Winnie Lanier; Charles “Charley” Chester (18871962) married (1) Drucilla Lummus; (2) Ruth.
John served in the Confederate Army, Company “I”, Paxton’s Company, Col. Lee’s battalion. He surrendered at Kingston, Georgia on 1 May, 1865 to Gen. Juder. He served in the Cavalry.
DRURY “DREW” JONES Drury “Drew” Jones was born 1842, married (1) Mrs. Mary V. (Taylor) Scott; (2) Grace Reeder.
The following children were born to Drew and his first wife: Ada, who married Joseph Murphy, Sr.; Drew “Snide”, Jr., married Rosa Davis. To his second marriage, he had the following children: Sam, who married Molly Miller; and Homer “Jack”, who married (1) Epsie Wallace, and (2) Effie Jewel Proctor. Drew first lived near the New Colony Community until 1890 when he moved to the Hoxie Community (one mile south of present-day Bivins) and ran a general mercantile store. The name of Hoxie was changed to Wayne when a post office was officially established.
Drew enlisted in the Confederate Army on 13 May 1862 in Georgia. He was captured at Vicksburg, Miss.
JOHN LEWIS AND MARGARET (JONES) STONE John Stone, born 8 Aug 1850, died 25 Dec. 1925, married Margaret “Maggie” Jones, born 24 May 1848, died 22 April 1925. Both are buried in the Laws Chapel Cemetery, 3 miles west of Atlanta, Texas.
The Stone family, who were from Alabama, settled between Center Hill and New Colony, their father, Arthur Stone, had purchased land in that area.
To this marriage the following children were born: Lewis (1885-1972), married Irene Baker; John A. (1883-1949), married Ola Teel; Dora (1873-1958), married Walter Blizzard; Ruff Marshall (1877-1968), married Nelia Huff; Carrie Delia (1878-1974) married Sloan Taylor; Charlie Clem (1888-1974), married Minnie Frazier; Thomas Coleman (1887-1891, infant death).
SIDNEY AND LOU (JONES) HALL Sidney Hall (1856-?) married (1) Lou Jones; (2) Essie (or Elizabeth) Ivy. The following children were born to the first marriage: Sally (1882-?), married Clemmy Chapman Shelton, Jr.; Rena (1885-1846), married Albert Holt; Madge Mae (1888-1973), married Alto Chessnutt.
Children born to the second marriage were: Richard; Claud; Sadie (died at age 17); Frank; Charlie; Bessie Mae married a Biffey; Willie Pearl, married a Holland; Hazel, married a Bullard; O. L.; Orville (infant death) Aline, married a Humphrey.
Sidney’s parents were John Hall (1810-1824) and Elizabeth Ann Johnson (1824-1881). Lou’s parents were Charles Jones \\1808-1882) and Sallie Christian (18111895).
ABSOM AND ELIZABETH (JONES) MCGINNIS Absom (sometimes called Osborn), born 1812 and died 1879, married Elizabeth Jones, born 1840, died 1884. Both are buried in the Laws Chapel Cemetery, 3 miles west of Atlanta, Texas, near her father and mother, Charles, and Sallie (Christian) Jones.
Absom and Elizabeth only had two children: Walter Drew (1873-1947) and Mentie E (1876-1892, young death).
They moved in later years to Liberty County, Texas. Walter married (1) Ethel Lanier and to this union was born George and Lillie; (2) Maggie Grogan and to this union was born Ozette and Drew.
JIM AND EMILY (JONES) LUNDY Jim Lundy, born ?, died 1896 married Emily Jones, whose parents were Charles and Sally (Christian) Jones. (Jim possibly had another wife either before or after his marriage to Emily Jones. Her name was Molly.
To this union was born: Albert Mabry, born 1876, married Fannie Gillespie; Sarah Cornelia, born 1874 died 1875, infant death; Aaron Marvin, born 1878, married Emma steed.
