Simulation Program highlights Post-Incarceration Challenges

Last year I participated in a “Prison Reentry Simulation” which replicates the challenges and struggles faced by thousands of individuals transitioning from incarceration back into society.

The goal of this simulation was for participants to gain an understanding of the significant obstacles faced by men and women attempting to navigate the world post incarceration. I always encourage participation in things that will broaden perspectives and shape understanding.

To walk in the shoes of one who is returning home from incarceration gives invaluable insight for professionals who are tasked with helping those individuals achieve a successful reentry.

This year, Cass County is partnering with non-profit Communities Unlimited to bring this training experience closer to home. I am encouraged by the enthusiasm this event has generated. If you are interested, please join us on the morning of May 29th at the Cass County Law Enforcement Training Center. There is still time to sign up and participate if you are interested.

Call my office at 903-756-5181 extension 0 to sign up! If you’d like to read an article about my experience last year, check out County Progress Magazine at https://countyprogress.com/in-their-shoes/ Last month, I spoke at a Texas Workforce Commission event called THRIVE which stands for “Turning Hiring Risks into Valued Employees.” If we can successfully tap into this often overlooked workforce, we can reduce recidivism and build a better future for our community. While I was there, I met Cheri Garcia, founder of Cornbread Hustle. Check out the video below for more information.
