Safety first on Halloween

Witches and ghosts, monsters and fairies, and all of you dreamers who dare to dress up and trick or treat for Halloween.

Having fun and getting candy are certainly the most important parts of this spooky time of year. However, it is also important to do it safely so you can get home and enjoy the spoils of your adventure. So, here are some tips for having a safe and still candy-filled Halloween.

Always make sure to cross streets at corners and look both ways before crossing. Keep your heads up and out of any electronic devices. Keep to sidewalks and paths if possible. If not, always walk facing traffic and as far left as possible.

Always be aware of what vehicles are doing around you, such as backing up or turning. Adults should always accompany kids under the age of 12.

If older kids wish to trick or treat, make sure they know to stick to familiar areas that are well lit and always trick or treat in groups. And don’t forget to carry glow sticks or a flashlight so drivers can see your amazing costumes.

For those out driving on their brooms or in their cars, please always remember to slow down, especially in neighborhoods.

Kids are excited by the prospect of a bucket or bag full of candy and can get away from adults.

Most importantly, put the phones down and concentrate on what’s going on around you.

Remember, broken brooms and bent wings don’t fly. Be safe this year and enjoy all the candy your tummies can handle.
