Rotary Reflections 2022
One of the seven primary focus points for Rotary International is basic education and literacy. Our Club has helped to sponsor the Atlanta Public Library’s summer reading program for years. Some times, as in this year, we are a bit behind the “8-ball” in getting the money to them, but we do come through! And Kendra Harrell has promised that this $500 check will go to next summer’s program (and maybe next year’s contribution will be a bit more timely!)
How important is reading? As one who has at least one book “going” at a time, I’d be lost without being able to read. Oh, the adventures I’ve been on and the places I’ve visited through those books. And how fun is it to read about a location that I’ve actually been able to visit. And then how important is it to read directions to make something (cake or quilt), replace something (wiring a door bell) or improvise something to make it work (& checking out tips on the internet)? Or what about taking medications? Of course, you may need your reading glasses AND a magnifying glass to SEE it…or to even open it if you don’t have a two-year old present to do that???? You should see me trying to figure out how to change the CDs in my player and get it to continuously repeat. Maybe I should just let it play non-stop and not worry about the details.
I just read an article about Jenna Bush Hager who did a great job not only writing books, but stressing the importance of reading to your children AND setting the example of reading yourself. I’m curious, do you spend as much time reading as you do watching something electronic? What does that say about you? Think about it!
But what about children all over the world who don’t have the opportunity to read. They have a strike against them through no fault of their own. We may not be able to help a child across the world, but what about reading to your children/grandchildren or the neighbor’s child? We can make a difference right here in Cass County. I’m not even going to get into WHAT you read, but let’s be sure it’s truth that we are teaching these children.
As you know, trash is one of my “buttons.” Well, last week we picked up in front of Atlanta High School and this is the first time I’ve had a “Litter-ah-see” moment when I picked up a paperback called a Legacy of Lies. If I were to make a conclusion, I’d say we have more beer drinkers than readers!
Come join me at Rotary November 10th at Luigi’s to learn more about our wonderful program and opportunities in Atlanta Area Rotary Club. (Please note, normally we meet the third week, but will meet second week this month.) If you can come, leave me a text (903691-9717) so I can set the table for you!
