Resurfacing to begin in county

TxDOT has approved about 117 miles of Northeast Texas highways. The roads are scheduled to receive new surfaces starting this month which includes approximately 20 miles in Cass County. The Texas Department of Transportation has approved a low bid of $7.7 million for the project last fall from contractor Missouri Petroleum Products Company of Bullard, TX. The company will seal coat highways in seven counties located within the Atlanta District.

“Seal coating a highway is a cost-effective process that preserves the pavement structure and improves skid resistance,” said Atlanta District Engineer Buddy Williams. The process involves placing a layer of hot asphalt over the old pavement and then covering it with crushed stone.

These Cass County roads include SH 8 from: 2.5 miles N. of FM 995 to SH 77; SH 77 rom: 3.2 miles W. of SH 8 to 0.3 miles W. of FM 994; FM 161 from Morris County Line to FM 130; and FM3129 from FM 249W to SH 77.

In a separate bid, a portion of US Highway 59 southwest of Atlanta is scheduled to be resurfaced next year.

“The resurfacing project will begin just south of FM 2328 North and end 1.9 miles south of FM 2328 South. The total project length is about 2.3 miles,” said Texarkana Area Engineer Tommy Bruce. “The project will also include some improvements to the bridge rail in that section along with new pavement markings.”

East Texas Bridge, Inc. of Longview was awarded the contract with a bid of $11.8 million.

Work is expected to begin in January 2023 and should be completed the following September.
