PROFESSIONAL SPOTLIGHT
Danica Porter made history in November 2011, when she became the first African American female to become city secretary of Atlanta, Texas. She is a native of Nash and graduated from Texas High School.
Danica is the middle child of three siblings and the only girl. Her parents are Nolan and Lawanda Flowers of Texarkana. She is married to her wonderful husband, Antonio Porter, of 14 years; he works as route manager at Waste Management. They have two children, Antonia, 19, currently in college on a basketball scholarship and Alyssa, 10, going into junior high.
She received her associate’s degree from Texarkana College in Business, her bachelor’s degree at Texas A&M and will be completing her master’s degree in December.
Prior to coming to work with the City of Atlanta, she worked at Texas A & M for six years in the President’s office and business office. She applied for the job in Atlanta, and was hired. Every day is something different and she always enjoys a challenge.
Porter wears many hats including councilwoman for the City of Nash. She loves her job with the City of Atlanta where she works as finance director and administrative clerk supervisor and loves meeting the needs of our citizens.
She enjoys reading, spending time with her family and traveling. Her goal is to one day become a city manager. But she enjoys the job she has now.
When talking with David Cockrell, I asked him why he hired her. He said, “She was the top applicant, the best and the brightest and they communicate well. She is an outstanding person and outstanding employee.”
