Power Outages cause Atlanta and McLeod ISDs to cancel classes
On Monday night into Tuesday morning, severe weather storms blew through Cass County causing power outages. Up until around 8:00 a.m. power was out forcing Atlanta and McLeod to cancel classes Tuesday. All other Cass County Schools remained open.
As of when the newspaper was published Tuesday morning there was still the possibility of further severe weather moving into Wednesday afternoon, with more overnight thunderstorms, and the possibility of flooding according to the National Weather Service.
Before 10:00 p.m. SWEPCO issued this statement on their social media page, “Damaging winds and hundreds of lightning strikes have resulted in reported outages in northeast Texas, southwest Arkansas, and northwest Louisiana. Here is a look at the growing number of lightning strikes via weatherbug.com. Shreveport, Stonewall, Longview, and Texarkana areas are seeing the highest number of outages reports due to weather. SWEPCO crews are already working to restore power, when and where it is safe to do so.”
However, on Tuesday morning, most of the county’s power was back on.
Atlanta ISD issued this statement, “After consulting with city officials regarding the timeline for power restoration, we have made the difficult decision to cancel classes for today. Severe weather conditions have led to widespread power outages across our area, and we prioritize the safety and well-being of our school community above all else.”
