Power lifting team raise money
A local Atlanta business sponsored two community fundraising events this past weekend. Cass County Fitness Center conducted a bake sale and then held a first time bench press weight-lifting competition in order to support member Wayne Wright and his medical expenses. With another community effort at the same time, the fitness center also concluded a food gathering contribution that filled a long shelf in the workout center with food and then was given to the Harvest House Food pantry of Atlanta.
“We do the food gathering about this time each year around Thanksgiving,” fitness center general manager Monica Beeman said. “The bake sale and bench press were something special we wanted to do for Wayne. Everyone one pitched in. We raised some $1,700.”
The lifting competition was in six categories of age both male and female. The contest is judged by best of three lifts. Some 18 contestants participated in the bench press. Some 27 individuals contributed one or more of the baking items, Beeman said.
“Then, other members of the center and those wanting to help made donations and added to the entry fees for the lift. It was all just working together. We were happy to do it,” Beeman said.
Beeman noted that the two overall winners of the bench press competition, male and female, were over 50 years of age. They were Paul McCarty and Monica Beeman herself. As for the food drive, Harvest House is an entity of Trinity Church that serves Cass and Bowie Counties Texas; Miller County, Arkansas and Caddo Parish, Louisiana. Its goal is to alleviate hunger and not only is self-funded but relies on donations of the community and other charitable organizations.
