Native plant sale planned for May 4
The Caddo Wildflower Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas is planning an all-native plant sale for 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 4, at the Cass County AgriLife Extension Center, 1008 N. Louise St., Atlanta, Texas.
At 8:30 a.m., early-bird attendees will be treated to a special PowerPoint presentation showcasing the plants in the sale and will then be granted first place in line.
Native plants in the home landscape save water, require less maintenance and limit the need for herbicides, pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. Hardier and more disease-resistant than imported or exotic species, natives also provide much-needed habitat for such wildlife as butterflies and birds.
With more than 5,000 species of plants native to Texas, variety is never-ending. And with its abundant rainfall, acid soils and temperate climate, East Texas is home to more than 2,500 species of natives.
Natives available at the plant sale will include annuals, vines, shrubs, trees and many of the ever-popular perennials.
The Native Plant Society of Texas is a statewide, nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the conservation, use and research of plants and plant habitats native to Texas.
The Caddo Wildflower Chapter of NPSOT helps its members learn more about using natives in the landscape through monthly speakers, field trips and plant and seed exchanges.
The group meets at 7 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of each month at the Mary Dougherty Senior Citizens Center, 507 S. Kaufman St., Linden. Meetings are open to the public and start with a potluck before ending with a native plants/flowers raffle.
