Morris Upchurch Middle School students learn essential life skills

A Special to the Journal

The Morris Upchurch Middle School campus has initiated a new activity period on Fridays. While they are fully aware of how important curriculum is, they are finding the time to incorporate essential life skills on Fridays during their Activity Period.

Each Friday grade levels are placed in groups and taught different tools to assist them in everyday life.

Last Friday Asst. principal Mr. Carter showed the eighth grade boys how to tie a tie. The young men did great and even tutored each other on small tips throughout the learning experience.

While the guys were busy with this task, our eighth grade girls were led by Mrs. Russell, Mrs. McMillon, and Mrs. Campbell in learning a few tricks of their own.

They were split into three different groups and rotated from one place to the next. The girls learned how to properly write a thank you note, how to sew a button on a shirt, and they even had time to develop the skill of fraying an old pair of jeans to keep them in style for a little while longer.

Each grade level will have an opportunity to do these things and then we will move on to something else. Other life skills that MUMS plans to teach are as follows: How to check fluids in a vehicle, how to properly eat with certain utensils in a formal dinner setting and how to properly balance a checkbook.

M.U.M.S. administration is excited about this new adventure, and the students are equally anxious to learn.

Stay tuned and see what they accomplish next. At M.U.M.S., they are enjoying holistically teaching the students and evolving them into functioning members of society.
