MLK Day Celebration slated for Jan.14

Linden Heritage Foundation’s annual membership meeting and Martin Luther King Day Celebration is slated for 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 14, inside Historic Cass County Courthouse in Linden according to Joe Lovelace.

Lovelace said the program will have a theme associated with African American History, with a presentation by Mason Darrell Barrett.

“Join the Linden Heritage Foundation in the courtroom of the historic Cass County Courthouse for a special event during the week of celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,” Lovelace said. “History has lessons to teach us if we will only read and listen.”

“This is particularly true of the accomplishments of people of color.”

Linden Heritage Foundation contends that in some communities there is little evidence or knowledge of those achievements, which the program hopes to highlight.

Barrett, a 1973 Linden-Kildare High School graduate, will give an oral presentation entitled ‘Invisible History: A Slave, a School and a Scholar.’

Lovelace said Barrett is an administrative law judge for the equal employment opportunity commission in Alabama and active member of the Fairview Community.

“Judge Barret will bring to the courtroom an oral history of a slave, a school and a scholar that will enlighten and inspire all,” Lovelace said. “I am excited to hear the presentation by Mason Darrell Barrett.”
