Legal sale of alcohol focus of special election

On Saturday, May 3, elections for both the City of Atlanta and Atlanta ISD will be held at Atlanta City Hall at 315 N. Buckner St. from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The City of Atlanta special election proposes “the legal sale of all alcoholic beverages, including mixed beverages.” If legalized, this means the sale of alcohol will be allowed for both on and off-site consumption.

As for the Atlanta ISD election, four candidates will be elected to the Board of Trustees. Three of the people on the ballot—Arlistel Maxie, Joel Steger, and Charlotte Stanley— are already on the board and are seeking re-election, while two other candidates—Joe Blizzard and Tyler Johnson—are non-board members looking to be elected.

For those unfamiliar, the school board election allows voters to vote as many times as the number of positions being voted for. For instance, in this election, because there are four board positions, voters are allowed to cast four votes. Voters may cast all four votes for one candidate or divide them between four candidates. At the end of the election, the candidate with the most votes will be elected.

Early voting for both elections will begin on Tuesday, Apr. 22 through Tuesday, Apr. 29 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Early voting will not be available on the weekend.
