John Minett Hefner and Glazia Allen Floyd

John Minett Hefner married Glazia Allen Floyd in 1869 and “they lived on a farm north of Marietta in Cass County. As was often the case in those days, there was more than one marriage between the two families. John Hefner’s sister, Molly, married Glazia Floyd’s brother David Anderson Floyd, thus creating many double relations.

There is some confusion about the spelling of the name Glazia. It is also found spelled Galazia, Glazier and Gallatia. There is also some doubt as to John Hefner’s middle name. It is usually recorded as the initial M. Records have been found that it was John Minett as used here, but a son John Milton carried a “junior” after his name, John Minett Hefner was the son of Alfred Hefner and his first wife who died after they came to Titus County, Texas. Her name is unknown to us. John M. was born February 17, 1842 in Titus County, Texas. He died January 18, 1923 and is buried in the Oak Ridge Cemetery, Marietta, Texas.

Glazia Allen Floyd was born June 22, 1852 the daughter of Reuben T. Floyd and his wife Galazia Mayfield who came to Texas from Georgia shortly after this daughter was born. Glazia died November 11, 1912 and is buried with her husband in the Oak Ridge Cemetery at Marietta, Texas.

The children of John Minett and Glazia Allen Floyd were: Will, born 1871; Charles, born May 1873; Robert, born March 1875; Minnie, born May 1878; John, born February 1882; Walter, born March 1886; and Mattie, born about 1880.

John Milton Hefner, who was born in Cass County north of Marietta March 3, 1883, stayed on the farm until he was 25 years old, then moved to Dallas where he found his lifetime work, his wife and where he reared his family.

John M. Hefner was the son of John Minett (or Milton) Hefner and his wife Glazia Allen Floyd. He was fifth in 3.

family of seven children.

Upon arriving in Dallas, John M. Hefner lived at the Y M C A and took a secretarial course at the Metropolitan Business College. His first job was with the Dallas Power and Light Company.

In 1910 he became private secretary to E.M. Powell who operated a Land Office that dealt exclusively with West Texas Land Leases, Mineral Leases and Large Acreage Sales. In 1925 when Mr. Powell died, he left the land office business to John M. Hefner, who enjoyed a successful and profitable business career during which time he accumulated several residential and commercial properties in Dallas.

In 1912 he married Bertie Mae Spencer. The marriage lasted until his death 51 years later. They were the parents of three sons: John Milton Hefner, Junior born July 26, 1916; Charles Robert Hefner born November 24, 1919; and Paul Henry Hefner born August 8, 1923 and died December 23, 1923.

John M. devoted his energies to family, church, and business until his two sons returned from Military service after World War II, at which time the sons reduced his business responsibilities allowing him to become an active Golfer.

John and Bertie Mae were very active in Baptist Church activities, and along with five other couples organized the Park Cities Baptist Church of Dallas in 1938. The Church is now one of the largest in the Southern Baptist Convention.

John Milton Hefner died June 3, 1963; his wife died August 17, 1973. Both enjoyed good health until about six months before their deaths.

John Milton Hefner, Junior married (1) Ida Mae Miller, August 6, 1938. They were the parents of two sons: John Milton Hefner III, born February 2, 1944 - unmarried; and William Charles Hefner, born January 1, 1946 who married Mary Sue Christians in 19?1. They are parents of Jill Ann Hefner born July 1, 1976 and Charles Edward Hefner born December 30, 1979.

John Milton Hefner, Junior was divorced in 1951 and in 1952 Married (2) Muriel Chamberlin Tips. They are the parents of one daughter: Deborah Lynn Hefner born July 18, 1953. She is unmarried.

Charles Robert Hefner, the second son of John M. and Bertie Mae married Bessie Jo Hand, April 25, 19^2. They are parents of three children: Charles Robert Hefner, Junior born July 3, 19^5; Suzanne Hefner born November 11, 19^5 and David Randall Hefner, born January 9, 1953 - unmarried.

Charles Robert Hefner, Junior married (1) Mary Lee McDonald, June 1963. They were the parents of Angela Lee Hefner born April 29, 196^._Charles Robert Hefner, Junior was divorced, in 197^ and married (2) Marsha Lang March 1978. They have no children.

Suzanne Hefner married (1) Milton Earl Haberer July 3, 1965- They were the parents o f Holly Lynn Haberer born August 15, 19&7- Suzanne was divorced in 1971. In 1974 she married James Marcus Blackwood. They have no children. HEFNER - CHARLES HENRY AND ANNIE LILLIAN “DAISY” Charles Henry Hefner took as his wife one of his former students, Annie Lillian Traylor, who was better known by her nickname “Daisy”. The couple was married December 29, 1901 in the home of her parents at County Line, Texas. (The County Line was between Cass and Morris Counties). Pol-lowing the wedding ceremony an “In Fair Dinner” was held honoring the Couple.

Charles Hefner, born June 9, 1872 in Cass County, Texas, was the son of John Minett Hefner and Glazia Allen Floyd Hefner. His great grandfather, Alfred Hefner, was a resident of TX as early as 1836. Annie Lillian Traylor, born December 15, 1882 in Georgia, was the daughter of George Washington Traylor and Mary Elizabeth “Mollie” Brooks. Both Charles and Daisy taught school before they married. During summer months, Charles would teach singing schools which were popular at the time.

They made their first home at Hughes Springs where both their children were born: Byron Hefner, born February 21, 1905 and Johnnie Marie, born April 6, 1909.

About 1913 Charles was elected to serve as District Clerk for Cass Co., so the family moved to Linden and made their home there for four years.

In 191? they moved to Atlanta, Texas where he became an insurance broker for Southwestern Life Insurance Co. He was successful in the business and in the mid 1920’s made the $100,000 Club which won for him an expense paid trip to Colorado Springs, Colorado where he and his wife stayed in the very beautiful and elegant Edgewater Beach Hotel.

Charles Hefner was a deacon of the First Baptist Church and served in Churches at Hughes Springs, Linden, and Atlanta. He and his wife were both members of the choir. He was also a 42nd degree Mason.

Daisy Hefner, who loved people, worked with young people and adults in the Baptist Church. She organized, and was leader of the first Girl’s Auxiliary at First Baptist Church, Atlanta. Charter members included Aline Clements, Evelyn Parker Dickinson and Ann Ellington and her daughter Marie.

She was a leader of Youth Camps held at the Mount of Blessings and various lake sites. Not only did she serve as president of the local W M U but was a board member of the Marshall District W M U. She also served as an officer of the Enon Association of Baptist Churches. She was a thrifty person and skillful as a seamstress. And she was very adept at other handwork, including crochet. Along with the many other things she made 11 crocheted “bedspreads... 9 double bed size and two king size.

She was a member of the Atlanta Garden Club ... would help community organizations, hard pressed for funds, raise money by producing a “home town” play.

Son Byron married (1) Helen Marcell Johnson of Atlanta in 1925. They were the parents of one son, Joe Benson Hefner. Byron’s second wife was Dale Russel of Hope Ark. He adopted her three-year-old daughter, Arthadale and the couple later had a daughter, Byron Benson, Junior called “Benny”.

Daughter, Johnny Marie, married Hershel Nathan Banner November 27, 1930. They were parents of three children: Suzanne Marie, Hershel Randall, and Jan Carolyn.

Charles Henry Hefner died October 17, 1941. His wife, Annie Lillian “Daisy” Hefner followed him in death October, 1967. Both are buried in Pine Crest Cemetery, Atlanta, Texas.
