James M. and Susan Dupree family

James M. Dupree, born 08 November 1840 in Hancock County, Georgia and died 19 June 1919. He is buried in Antioch Cemetery, Cass County, Texas. He married (1) Jane Shed 07 December 1867 who was born in Greene County, Georgia. She died in Georgia in 1870 and is buried in an unknown location. There are no known children to this marriage. He married (2) Susan Elmira Jones 06 February 1873 in Greene County, Georgia. She was born 03 July 1851 in Georgia and died 31 May 1933 in Cass County and is buried in the Antioch Cemetery.

James was the son of Lewis Edward and Francis AVERA Dupree. Coming to Texas with the James Dupree family was two sisters, Martha J. (Aunt Mat) and Caroline G. (Aunt Carrie). Martha was born abt. 1833, in Hancock County, Georgia and died 27 Jan 1927 and is buried at Antioch cemetery. She lived with James and his family until James died and then she lived with her nephews until she died. She never married. Aunt Carrie was born abt. 1841 and died 29 June 1934 and is buried at Beach Creek cemetery. She married J. M. Francis. There are no children to this marriage.

James served in the Confederate Army two different times. First he joined D Company, 4th Bn. 60th Georgia Infantry in October 1861. He was discharged on a Surgeons Certificate of disability 20 March 1862. James entered the war the second time on 09 September 1863 for the duration of the War. He was a Private in Company A 27th Battalion of Georgia Infantry, Confederate States Army. He enlisted at Sparta, Georgia and was paroled at Salisbury, North Carolina 02 May 1865 in accordance with the terms of a military convention of 26 April 1865. James and Susan came to Doddridge, Arkansas in 1881/1882 where they spent one year farming on land belonging to Tommy and Eddie Jones, “some kin to Susan”. They moved to Texas in 1883, to the Forest Hill Community. They were farmers and this is where they lived the rest of their lives. They joined the Church at Antioch soon after coming to that area. James was appointed church clerk 11 July 1891 and served as church clerk for many years until about 1911.

1. Mattie G. was born about 1874 in Georgia; died about 1882 and is buried in Doddridge, Arkansas 2. Jesse Dawson was born 04 December

2. Jesse Dawson was born 04 December 1875 in Hancock County, Georgia; died 15 February 1945 and is buried in Courtland Cemetery. He married (1) Sarah Elizabeth Austin 28 June 1905. She was born 06 July 1881 and died 22 Feb. 1938 and is buried in Courtland Cemetery. He married (2) Epsie Plennie POPE Waters 02 Jan. 1944. She died 01 July 1969 and is buried in Laws Chapel Cemetery. Children of Jesse and Sarah were Clarence Walter, Susan Theo Bobo Burson, Erma Maurene Hemperley, Leonard Leroy, William Lewis “Bill” and Charlie Isaac.

3. Lizzie was born abt 1878 in Hancock County, Georgia and died in 1881 Hancock County, Georgia. She is buried in an unknown location.

4. Lewis Gilbert was born 08 September 1880 in Hancock County, Georgia. He died 15 November 1969 and is buried in Antioch Cemetery. He married Gertrude Trimble 11 November 1903 in Cass County, Texas. She was born 14 January 1886 and died 06 April 1967. She is buried in Antioch Cemetery. Children of Lewis and Gertrude Dupree are Una Howe Crumpton, Era Elmira, Marion Gilbert, and Dorothy Josephine.

5. Mary Elizabeth “Missie” was born abt 1881 in Hancock County, Georgia; died 27 January 1912 and is buried in Antioch Cemetery.

6. Robert Green was born 25 February 1883, Miller County, Arkansas. He died 08 August 1966 and is buried in Antioch Cemetery. He married Emma Odessa Prator 05 December 1909 in Antioch Baptist Church. She was born 25 December 1891 and died 31 May 1968. She is buried at Antioch Cemetery. Children of Bob and Emma Dupree are, Eloise Olene Hunt, Ruell Magnus, Mary Sue Cameron and Robert Green Jr.

7. William Needom was born 13 August 1886 in Atlanta and died 19 July 1963 and is buried in Queen City Cemetery. He married Ruth Lou Harden 09 November 1909. She was born 20 December 1891 in Arkansas and died 27 February 1983 in Cass County, Texas. She is buried in the Queen City Cemetery. Needom and Ruth’s children are Verna Lee Clements, James Burgess “Jake” and Harold Harden .

8. James Henry “SHUG” was born 23 February 1889 and died 01 March 1969. He married Ida Josephine Thomas 20 November 1910.

James Henry Dupree, born 23 February 1889 in Cass County where he lived all his life. He died 01 March 1969. He married Ida Josephine Thomas 20 November 1910. She was born 16 February 1891 and died 24 April 1952. James and Ida Dupree are buried in the Laws Chapel Cemetery.

James Henry’s nickname was “Shug” and was called that most of his life. He was the youngest son of a confederate soldier from Sparta, Hancock County, Georgia. His father and mother, James M. and Susan Elmira JONES Dupree moved from Georgia to Texas in 1883. Shug was a farmer and he share cropped all over Cass County until he went to work at the canning factory in Atlanta where he worked until he retired.

Ida Josephine was the sixth of thirteen children, the daughter of John Davis and Alice Florentine RHEA Thomas. The Thomas’s lived and raised twelve of their children to adults in the Piney Grove Community. Ida was a housewife all of her life. James Henry and Ida are the parents of: 1. Durell “Twin” was born 24 September

1. Durell “Twin” was born 24 September 1911 and died 07 July 1992 in Texarkana, Bowie County, Texas. He married Ina Mae Bobo 24 Dec 1931. She was born 27 Feb 1912 and died 02 April 1999. They are both buried in Laws Chapel Cemetery.

2. Eudell “Twin” was born 24 September 1911 and died 26 March 1998 in Atlanta and is buried in Laws Chapel Cemetery. He married Rena Vee Cagle 23 September 1936. Rena Vee was born 04 October 1913 and died 14 October 1972, over twenty-five years before her husband and is buried in Laws Chapel Cemetery. They had one child, Rena Jo McCasland Cook.

3. Bernard Wayne was born 04 June 1913 and died 02 June 1975 in Atlanta and is buried in the Pine Crest Cemetery. He married Huschell Beatrice “Pat” Stewart, 04 January 1936, born 20 March 1917 La Porte, Texas. Bernard and Pat are the parents of Wayne Wilson, Joan Marie Reese, Eva Louise Shelby, and Linda Sue Jaggers.

4. Mattie Louise was born 29 December 1915 and died 23 August 1991 and is buried at Laws Chapel Cemetery. She never married.

5. Garland Earl “Buster” was born 06 February 1921 and died 28 February 1999. He is buried in Laws Chapel Cemetery. He married (1) Marie Wilcox 10 August 1939 born 18 February 1923 and died 04 June 1940. She is buried in the Huffines Cemetery. He married (2) Clydie Marie Law 06 July 1946. She was born 19 October 1928. Children of Garland and Clydie are Danny Garland, Thomas Randy, Suzanne Grand Bass and Mary Carolyn Shirley Surratt.

6. Eva Alice was born 27 December 1925. She married Porter David Stewart 31 August 1946 in Texarkana, Miller County, Arkansas. Porter died 31 December 1975 and is buried in Pine Crest Cemetery. Children of Porter and Eva are Gary David and Kathy Ann Long.

7. Bennie Loyd was born 09 December 1932 and married Peggy Sondra Wilbanks 30 December 1953. She was born 27 June 1936. Their children are Sandra Diann Balfe and Michael Loyd.

DURELL AND EVA MAE “BOBO” DUPREE FAMILY

Durell Dupree (Twin), born 24 September 1911, Piney Grove Community and died 07 July 1992 Wadley hospital, Texarkana, Bowie County, Texas and is buried in Laws Chapel Cemetery. He married Ina Mae Bobo, 24 December 1931 in Texarkana, Miller County, Arkansas. She was born 27 February 1912 to William Richard and Mollie TURNER Bobo. She died 02 April 1999 and is buried at Laws Chapel Cemetery. They moved from Cass County for about one year in the 1940’s to Texarkana, Texas and again in the 1960’s they move to Little Rock, Arkansas with the East Texas Motor Freight Company until 1971. Durell worked as a farmer, drove a pulpwood truck, other odd jobs and also worked as a plumber’s helper. During World War II he worked at Lone Star Army Ammunition Plant in Texarkana, Texas. After the war he farmed for a couple of years in the Antioch Community. Durell, Ina, and family move to Queen City, Texas and he was a mechanic in his own shop for several years. In the early 1950’s he went to work for East Texas Motor Freight where he worked until he retired in 1971.

By the time they retired, they had their home built in the Knights Bluff Community. They enjoyed fishing on Lake Wright Patman and in the winter months Durell would spend his time hunting. Living near the Atlanta State Park, they would drive through the park many times a day to see who was there. If anyone was there they didn’t know, they would stop and visit and they would become friends before they left the park. Submitted by Dean Dupree
