James Carter Smith

James Carter Smith was born in Georgia on July 20, 1798. A farmer by trade, he lived the majority of his life in Harris Co, Georgia, but relocated to Texas with members of his family late in life.

He married Mary Myhand on the 24th of May, 1831 in Harris Co, Georgia. They had one son before Mary’s death. On June 6, 1838, he married Elizabeth Ann Dodwell in Harris Co. Born on April 3, 1814 in Putnam Co, Georgia, Elizabeth Ann was the daughter of Arthur Dodwell and his wife, Mary Bussey. James and Elizabeth Ann had 12 children: Just prior to the Civil War, James’ second son, Hiram followed the family of his sweetheart to Texas. After the war, he convinced his parents and seven of his brothers and sisters to relocate to Texas. They came over a period of time to settle primarily in Cass and Morris counties.

The son of James Carter Smith and Mary Myhand was: 1. James Ervin Smith was born March 9, 1832 in Harris Co, Georgia. Nothing is known of him after the 1850 census at which time he was 18 and living in his father’s home.

The children of James Carter Smith and Elizabeth Ann Dodwell were all born in Harris Co, Georgia: 1. Hiram Judson Smith was born on May 2, 1839 and died on Aug 13,1923 in Morris Co, Texas. He is buried at Dalton Cemetery in Cass Co. He married Ruth Ann Elizabeth Satterwhite on December 8, 1861 in Harrison Co, Texas. They had 13 children: Elmira Missouria, Mary Elizabeth. Thomas Wesley, Henry Welborn, Francis Minervia, Lillie Leola, Luticia Cassandra, James Carter, Eugenia Emaline, Harmon Joseph, Beatrice Leon, Alpha Omega, and Eula Blanche Smith.

2. Thomas Benjamin Smith was born November 11,1840 and died in Harris Co, Georgia on January 20, 1913. He is buried at Sardis Baptist Church cemetery in Harris Co. He married Margaret W Thompson in Harris Co, on November 23, 1865. They had three children that are currently known: James F, Annie L, and Sallie F. Smith. Thomas married Mary Gammell in Harris Co, on April 27, 1890.

3. Harmon Bursie Smith was born on April 28, 1842 and died on August 29, 1916 in Morris Co, Texas. He is buried at Spring Hill Cemetery in Morris Co. He served in Company E of the 46th Georgia Infantry during the Civil War. He married Elizabeth Houge on August 3, 1865 in Georgia. They had 4 children of which three are known: James H, Maud, and Petie Smith. He moved to Texas in 1879 and lived in Cass Co for a short time before settling in the Rocky Branch community of Morris Co.

4. Mary Jane Smith was born on February 1, 1844 and died on December 22, 1930 in Cass Co. She married Francis M. Daniel on February 17, 1859 in Harris Co, Georgia. They had two children: Mary Francis and O.T. Daniel. Her husband died in service during the Civil War. On May 9, 1866, she married Samuel Newton Chapman in Harris Co. They had 3 children: John Allen, Elizabeth J, and Minnie Chapman. Mary Jane and her family came to Texas in December of 1879 and lived in northwestern Cass Co.

5. Missouri Ann Smith was born November 24, 1845 and died circa 1917. She is buried in an unmarked grave at Creekmore Cemetery in Cass Co, Texas. She was the fourth wife of William Hastings Carlton whom she married in Cass Co, on December 23, 1866. They had one son, Samuel A Carlton.

6. John David Smith was born September 26, 1847 and died in Harris Co, Georgia on November 3, 1873. He married Ardella Elizabeth Cook circa 1872. There are no known children.

7. Lucretia Elizabeth Smith was born February 25, 1850 and died on April 11, 1886. She is buried in an unmarked grave in Creekmore Cemetery in Cass Co, Texas. She was the third wife of William Hasting Carlton. They were married in Cass Co on April 2, 1885. They had no children.

8. James Henry “Judge” Smith was born on May 10, 1851 and died on April 6, 1928 in Cass Co. He is buried in the Creekmore Cemetery in Cass Co. He came to Texas with his family in 1879 and lived in Cass and Morris counties. He married Nancy Ann Cook in Harris Co, Georgia circa 1872. They had 7 children of which 4 are known: Lemmie, Hiram Elmer, Ozie, and Lera Ona Smith.

9. Martha C Smith was born on December 23, 1852 and died September 25, 1917 in Heard Co, Georgia. She is buried at the Ephesus Baptist Church cemetery in Heard Co, Georgia. She married Samuel G Cook in Harris Co, Georgia on January 18, 1873. They had 3 children: Mary J, Lucius, and Henry Allison Cook.

10. Amanda Emeline Smith was born on November 1, 1854 and died in Morris Co, Texas on October 15, 1912. She is buried at the Spring Hill Cemetery in Morris Co. She married Sanford B Weaver in Cass Co on August 9, 1882. They had one son: Leland Jack Weaver.

She married Elijah Davis McDaniel on April 17, 1890 in Morris Co, Texas. She was his third wife. They had 3 children: Connor, Lillie May, and Ruby A McDaniel.

11. Catherine Smith was born March 26, 1857 and died October 22, 1861 in Harris Co, Georgia.

12. Allen A Smith was born on July 14, 1860 and came to Texas with his parents in 1879. Nothing more is currently known about him.

James and Elizabeth Smith came to Cass County, Texas in 1879 and farmed there the remainder of their lives. James Carter Smith died at the age of 90 on October 4, 1888 in Cass Co. Elizabeth Ann Smith died July 14, 1890. They are buried together at the Dalton Cemetery in Cass Co, Texas.
