Hwy 77 near Atlanta Middle School officially School Zone
During the last City commissioners meeting Monday, December 16, the commissioners discussed and considered the possible action approving an ordinance regulating the speed of motor vehicles on Hwy 77 within the corporate limits of the City of Atlanta, Texas.
TxDot performed a traffic study along Hwy 77 from city limits to city limits and recommended the following ordinance change. The only real change to the existing speed is that within the school zone at Atlanta Middle School the speed was only “advisory” currently and therefore citations could not be issued.
This new ordinance will make the school zone “regulatory” and the school zone limit may be enforced.
The commissioners voted and agreed, making it law.
City Manager David Cockrell released a statement saying, “We’re pleased that TxDot initiated this speed study and we agree with their conclusion that mandatory speed reductions in the school zone will improve safety.”
