The George Hood Family

George Arundel Hood was born on the 23rd of July, 1865 at Selby, Yorkshire, England, the eighth child of James Hood and Sarah Arundel.

George Hood applied for his passport on the 5th of April, 1882 and no doubt emigrated to the U.S. soon after. His passport number was 13712. He came to the United States alone, and he traveled around the US., eventually settling in Mt. Pleasant, Titus County, Texas where he married Mary Ella Michie, daughter of James W. Michie and Susan Meadows Chapman. They married July 05, 1888 in Titus County. George died in Jefferson March 04, 1943 and is buried in the Berea Cemetery.

George and Mary Ella had eight children: Susan Almeda Hood, born June 10, 1891 in Titus County, married Henry Harrison Hopkins on January 04,1905. Susan “Aunt Susie” as she was known, died in Jefferson, Marion County, Texas October 14, 1993 at the age of 102 and is buried in the Berea Cemetery.

Bernard Wilkinson Hood, born January 01, 1893 in Titus County, married Lora. They had no children. He died February 22, 1975 in Jefferson and is buried in the Berea Cemetery.

Sarah “Sally” Hood, born January 19, 1895 in Titus County, married Joe Reece Hopkins April 30, 1911. Reece was a brother to Henry. Sally died April 23, 1987 in Jefferson and is buried in the Berea Cemetery.

Gertrude Ester Hood, born August 25, 1897 in Titus County, married Richard Eugene “Bud” Hayes in Linden, Cass Co., Texas April 15, 1917. She died in Jefferson May 17, 1977 and is buried in the Berea Cemetery.

Georgia Lee Hood, born June 01, 1899 in Titus County, married Curtis Culpepper in Jefferson, Texas on April 27, 1924. Georgia is still living.

Louetta Hood, born September 03, 1903 in Cass County, Texas, married W. A. Brown, Willard Yokley and William “Bill” Jarrell. She died September 30, 1990 in Marshall, Harrison Co., Texas and is buried in the Berea Cemetery, Jefferson, Tx.

Jimmie Lee Hood, born September 10, 1905 in Cass County married Sidney Culpepper in Jefferson December 23, 1923. She is still living in Keene, Texas. C. L Hood, born May 01, 1908 in Cass County, Texas married Cecil Cope. He died in 1983 in California.

George and Mary Hood joined the Seventh-Day Adventist Church while living in Mt. Pleasant. They moved to the New Hope Community so their children could attend the Church School there.

In the early 1920s the Hoods moved to Jefferson in Marion County where a Seventh-Day Adventist School had been established in 1914 in the Berea Community where they lived out their lives and are buried in the community cemetery.
