Flag Day
Words spoken, read, sung and remembered with sincerity filled the Cass County Courthouse courtroom Flag Day June 14, for the celebration of the American and Texas flags.
Americans for Prosperity-Texas (AFP-Texas) organized the event with assistance from local leaders and the East Texas Republican Women who sponsored an ice cream social.
Flag Day is a holiday celebrated June 14 commemorating the adoption of the flag of the United States June 14, 1777.
The adopting flag resolution said “the flag of the 13 United State be 13 strips, alternate red and white, and the union be 13 stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.”
Some 50 audience members prayed and then sang the national anthem before listening to two leaders give personal remarks as to the meaning of the flags for them. The two were Bill Miller, presiding judge of the 5th Judicial District of Texas, and Travis Ransom, Cass County judge.
A prominent feature of the gathering was the presentation of colors by five members of the Marshall High Air Force Junior ROTC who were distinctively dressed in the air force’s dark blue uniforms, white neckerchiefs and gloves and hat.
Pastor Richard Wade was present to give the opening prayer. The welcome and closing remarks were given by Zack Baldwin, grassroots coordinator for AFP-Texas.
Kristi Antonick, coalitions director for AFP-Texas, gave the purpose of the event by saying the American flag was essentially about “freedom,” when one attempted to sum its meaning in a single word.
Following the about 30 minute program, ice cream was served as a gesture to thank the crowd for its attendance.
