Finding a Tracking Dog

In Texas, no more than two dogs may be used to trail a wounded deer in all counties, according to TPWD. However, in Jasper, Newton, Sabine and San Augustine counties, a person may trail a wounded deer with no more than two leashed dogs held by the person in control of the dogs. A “wounded deer” is a deer leaving a blood trail.

One of the best ways to locate a good tracking dog in your area is by word of mouth from trusted sources. There also are several contacts available on social media.

Facebook carries several lists, including the Texas Blood Tracking Network, East Texas Hunting Club (Wounded Game Recovery)a nd Deep East Texas Deer Recovery. Another good one is united bloodtrackers.org.

Expect to pay a call fee for the handler coming out, plus a finder’s fee if the deer is found.
