Federal escaped prisoner captured in Atlanta

Ramon Benjamin Fernandez, the escaped inmate from FCI-Texarkana was arrested this morning by officers from the Atlanta Police Department. He is currently being booked into the Cass County Jail until he is transported back home to his room at a federal prison. According to Atlanta Police Chief Robin Betts. Fernandez was arrested by the ice machine kiosk in Atlanta. Around 12:30 p.m., Fernandez was booked into the Cass County Jail until he is transported back to federal prison.

Sheriff Jeff Neal confirmed that Bowie County Sheriff ’s Office was called to the scene of a break-in where the inmate went in search of a communication device around 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan.1 on Walker Road. Neal said that the homeowner held Fernandez at gunpoint, however when he saw the police coming ran away from the house. It was then later that Atlanta Texas, PD recaptured him.

KTAL reported that “the 29-year-old Fernandez was reported missing from the satellite camp adjacent to the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) around 4:30 p.m. Saturday. The United States Marshals Service, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and other law enforcement agencies were notified and an internal investigation was initiated.”

It is unclear what happens next for Fernandes who is serving “a 37-month sentence for the importation of methamphetamine greater than 500 grams.” It can be assumed, however, that he will not be sent back to where he was being held currently because of escape, since the Federal Correctional Institution, Texarkana is a low-security prison.
