Family is satisfied to finally receive some justice in Brooks case
A heart-breaking ordeal finally began to have some closure when 32-year-old (Age Correction from last week’s article) Charles Brooks JR. accepted a plea deal on Friday.
It was the last day he could accept the deal, pleading guilty to 40 years in prison on Friday for an injury to a child with serious bodily injury. He also pled to five years on an aggravated robbery.
Brooks was originally arrested by Dallas County Sheriff ’s Office and charged with injury to a child with intent to cause severe bodily injury and serious mental deficiency or impairment, a first-degree felony punishable by a maximum sentence of 99 years or life in prison and/ or a maximum fine of $10,000, according to earlier Journal-Sun reports.
Sources close to the family reported at the time that then-2-year-old Blake had sustained serious injury while under the care of Brooks at his home in Dallas, though Brooks had contended the child had fallen down a flight of stairs.
Instead, Dallas Medical City Hospital staff found evidence of abuse soon after Blake was admitted, with injuries that included a severe brain bleed with swelling and adult bite marks on both of the toddler’s legs.
For Grandparents Carmen and Gary, it may allow them to breath a little easier letting them know that there has been some justice for Blake.
After the trial Carmen told the Journal-Sun, “We are glad to finally get some form of justice after all of this time. We would love for the public, and those who have fallen in love with Blake, to help us to be his voice when it is time for Brooks to come to his parole board hearing.”
“Can’t express enough how important it is to watch your children and grandchildren. This is a nightmare I wouldn’t wish on anyone.”
The August 14 victim impact statements may have given some opportunity for some closure. However according to Tony Buzbee, there may be additional legal filings.
“I was hired to attempt to obtain funds to help support little Blake and the care he needs. The plea and conviction are the first step in that process. What Charles Brooks did to that poor child is unspeakable. I am happy that the DA kept at it and ensured that justice was served. As far as the criminal process goes, justice has now been served. We have more work yet to do on the civil side.”
Though there have been some positive signs with Blake. He has a very long road ahead of him.
Three months ago, after a series of ups and downs regarding Blake’s health, Blake was able to come home again–this time off the ventilator and was even able to go to church.
Blake and his family have been fighting for his life for the past two years.
In posts on social media on the “Prayers for Blake” Facebook page, Blake’s grandmother, Venetia Kay Simpson gave several good reports, starting on April 30.
Though it was reported Blake was beaten by Brooks “within an inch of his life” at Brooks’ Dallas Duplex in April 2021–and has since gone through many ups and downs–Blake was able to leave the hospital and go home in time for Christmas last year. After a series of setbacks, he was able to return home with his family this Spring.
“Blake did it y’all! He went 12 hours today without the ventilator and had no issues.️ God, we see you loud and clear. Keep those prayers coming,” Simpson posted to the prayer page.
