Drug disposal event Saturday

On Oct. 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Cass County Sheriff ’s Office will be hosting a prescription pill disposal event at the Brookshire’s located at 402 E Main St. in Atlanta.

This event is designed to encourage local residents to safely dispose of their unused, unwanted, and outdated prescription drugs.

Data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration has shown that children age twelve and older who have abused prescription drugs got them from family and friends more than half of the time.

This includes sometimes taking those prescriptions from medicine cabinets. Another important factor in the disposal of prescription drugs is that when flushing them, they can sometimes end up in the groundwater. While groundwater that is used as a source for drinking water is put through a rigorous treatment process, that process may not remove all pharmaceutical contaminants.

Once the event is concluded, the DEA will come and collect all of the prescriptions that have been dropped off and incinerate them.

If you are unable to make the event but have prescription drugs that you would like to dispose of, you may also take them to the Cass County Sheriff ’s Office. There they have a collection box where you can safely dispose of any prescription drugs.
