Cole, Hagler inducted

The Teachers Association of Texas held the 2021 Professional Development Conference in Corpus Christi, Texas last month. Linden natives Squire Cole Jr. and C.J. “Shorty” Hagler were nominated by their former students to be inducted into the 1st Hall of Fame for Agricultural science teachers.

The association exists to recognize and honor agricultural science teachers whose careers, achievements, and contributions stand exemplary. Inductees are known as well-rounded professionals that have proven their success with FFA activities, in the classroom, as well as community involvement.

They have proven their desire to provide students with opportunities for premier leadership, personal growth and career success over a significant period of time.

Squire Cole Jr. taught 1946-1949 Cass County Vocational School, Linden; 1949-1951 Harrison County Vocational School, Leigh; 1951-1969 Fairview, Linden; 1969-1987 Linden-Kildare High School. In August 1987 he was awarded his Texas State Honorary Farmer degree for teaching 45 years. When receiving his tenure plaque and pen, Cole was the third person and first African American to receive one in the state of Texas. On Thursday, July 22, 2021 he was the first African American to be inducted into the Agricultural Science Teachers Hall of Fame. Cole’s grandchildren accepted his award for him: Kathleen Cole-Jenkins, Vannoy Cole Jr., Sammie Lockhart Jr., and Maudene Cole.

CJ Hagler taught 1950 West; 1951-1961 Maydelle; 1961-1994 Linden-Kildare High School. He became co-agriculture science teacher with Cole in 1969 and taught agriculture for 43 years earning his Texas State Honorary Farmer degree. Horace Hodge is a former student for both teachers and he accepted the Hall of Fame award for Hagler.

Former student Darla Washington Chitsey spearheaded the Hall of Fame induction and coordinated a surprise celebration from C.J. Hagler who is 94 years of age. It was held Saturday, July 31st at the County Seat Café in Linden, Texas. It was a grand memorable event that included his family, friends, former students, Mayor, The Honorable Lynn Reynolds and Board Chairman, Ag Workers Insurance, Marcus Hill.

We are extremely proud of these two honorary teachers who were great friends as well. They inspired and touched so many lives throughout their careers and always kept everyone laughing. They both left inspiration and values with their students that will last for generations. Linden, Texas is very proud because the stories of these two men will forever be told.
