CHRISTMAS TREE AUCTION

The watch is on. Some 15 community-inspired and decorated Christmas trees are on the block for auction this Christmas season by the CHRISTUS St. Michael Hospital-Atlanta Auxiliary.

The trees are on display in the cafeteria and bring an almost around-the-clock showing of good cheer to the area. Even more than good cheer, each one will bring fund-raising support for the auxiliary’s annual awarding of scholarships.

“We have some supporters who keep coming in to watch how the bidding is going on certain trees,” tells hospital auxiliary volunteer Babs McCoy. “They want to win.”

Babs herself has her eye on a tree that’s decorated with medical implements, including for laughs, a prominent bedpan.

Two other trees attracting quick attention are, first, a tree whose limbs and needles are black.

Then, there’s the Barbie doll pink tree that Barbie herself must have approved.

The silent auction is an annual scholarship fundraising event for the auxiliary. Some 15 artificial trees, each about four feet in height are provided to businesses, organizations and community members who wish to support the effort. These same businesses then decorate in any fashion they wish, and the trees are put out for auction.

The bidding will end at 4:00 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 12, the day of the town’s general open house. Drop by at almost any time of day or day of the week and place a bid. The way of placing a bid is to take the pencil and paper that is provided, bid and sign. Then, one can hope to win or check back on occasion to see how the bidding is going.

One thing is for sure. The auction may be silent, but a decorated Christmas tree in one’s home, created by one person in support of another will bring an exclamation of joy.
